You And I Are Gonna Live Forever! Is Extending Life Indefinitely A Good Thing?

They say that there are only three things that are certain in life, birth, death and taxes, but what would happen if we took one of those things away? No this isn’t a post on making your tax bill lower. Instead, it’s about death, the great hereafter, and whether it is an inherently good or bad thing to extend life indefinitely? It seems that the answer to this question can be largely tied up with spiritual beliefs. Read on to find out more.

No – What about heaven?

In a recent Science Fiction series on Netflix that you can see a trailer for below the underlying concept was that human consciousness could be recorded on a piece of technology called stack. This stack, as long as it is preserved, can be used to spin human consciousness backup into another body, and android body, and even into a virtual space, meaning that human life can be extended indefinitely. However, an aspect of this story is that some religious groups refused the process of being spun up once they have died because they believe it interferes with their religious beliefs.

This is an issue that illustrates one of the major problems with extending life indefinitely because, in fact, many religious groups including Catholic Christians may argue that it is not a good thing.

This reason they may see it in a negative light is that it interferes with the natural order of things and God’s will. In fact, Catholics, in particular, may suggest that God designed man to only survive for a certain time upon the earth and that the part that comes after our worldly existence known as heaven is far more important than anything that happens during it. Therefore with this type of thinking extending life independently would rob humans of that afterlife experience of heaven, making it an inherently negative thing.

Yes – Reduce suffering

However, there are other people that would take the view that death, the fear if it, and the suffering that the dying process causes us as humans is so negative, eliminating it would be a very positive thing to do.

In fact, some psychologists argue that many problems that people suffer during their lifetime, such as abandonment issues, jealousy, and even certain forms of anxiety all stem from fear the fear of death. Something that means abolishing this fear would have the potential to cure such issues and improve not only the length of people lives but the quality of them as well.

Yes – More time to do good

Both the religious and the non-religious cannot argue that be extending life indefinitely, whether that is through medical advancements, or even as Human Paragon suggest via the process of mind uploading could be a positive thing. This is because it would provide unlimited time in which to advance as a race, resolve the world’s problems, do good, and care for one another.

Of course, this would be dependent on people choosing to use their additional time for this and being motivated to go through with it. While the possibility for resolving all of the world’s political, economic, and most importantly humanitarian problems is there, there’s no guarantee that this will happen.

In fact, many writers explore the possibility that when faced with a utopian society our unquiet human brains may not cope as well as we think. Something that may resort to a continuation of struggle and conflict that will cause the psychological stimulation that we have become so used to as a species.

Although, in particular, some atheists may see such an extension of life as a positive development because their worldview is not dependent on a greater power than themselves. That means the responsibility to do good and resolve the world’s problem is entirely at their feet, and as such additional time in which to do this that also could eliminate much physical suffering would sound like a hugely appealing idea.

No – Meaning and motivation

However, the religious among us may argue that while all the good deeds we could accomplish would be positive, they could, in fact, end up being devoid of meaning.

This argument behind this is one that many Christian’s and other religious groups adhere to, and it’s that good deeds should be motivated by showing God’s love. In fact, it is only through the grace of God and his acceptance that we can perform such deeds because they spring from the love that he has provided us.

Therefore without those questions about what happens to us when we die, we may never turn to God, and as such lose the true meaning of life that is to trust in him. Something that many Christians would not want to sacrifice to technological breakthroughs and extended life, as it is the foundation that they build their life apon.

Therefore, in summary, the concept of extending life indefinitely is a complex one. It is quite possible that much physical and psychological suffering could be relieved by this advancement. However, it could cause additional suffering in the areas of spirituality and create some very tough quandaries for the religious in the long run. Also as ‘the long run’ could be something that could be infinite in scope, we had better decide what’s important before we embrace any life-altering technology that becomes available.

  1. Life was created and given to all by the creator in Heaven, “God”. Life is precious regardless of the state from the beginning, ie, whether it be defective or abnormal. We as God’s creation do not have the right to decided when a life ends, starting within the womb to birth to death. Granted, to defend your life in the process of taking a life, is the decision of the one who assaults and commits evil and it is their consequence because of their decision. Life is precious period!
