The Benefits of Laughing to Wellbeing
Laughing is contagious and has many proven benefits to our Wellbeing. The eminent psychologist on laughter, Robert Provine, Ph.D., of the University of Maryland, sustains that laughter is about relationships. It is a social connector.
“World Laughter Day” was established in India, on 10 May 1998, by Dr. Madan Kataria, Founder of the worldwide “Laughter Yoga movement“, and it is now celebrated in early May worldwide.
The World needs more laughter, more positivity, and a far greater positive outlook. A genuine smile pairs with intention in conversations that are characterized by deeper and authentic listening.
When was the last time you laughed from your heart? Do you remember the last time you spoke to someone, finding yourself laughing out loud? Do you remember how you felt?
Given what is happening in the World, at the macro and micro levels, you’ll agree with me that we need more laughter in our lives and at work. No, you won’t lose your credibility if you laugh more with colleagues and peers. Being credible and revealing yourself as being human are not mutually exclusive.
A smile goes a long way: Not only does it help feel more relaxed, shifting the energy within, but it will also enhance your connection with the people around you.
Laughter builds trust: It paves the way towards more self-compassion, in turn generating more empathy in everyday communication.
On the 7th of May, which marks World Laughter Day this year, bring some fun into your day by challenging yourself with extra, intentional smiles.
Learning to laugh/smile more requires “deliberate change”. Change in the brain response to inner and outer stimuli. Instead of defaulting to a day-by-day habitual mood, try to bring a gentle smile to your lips, and observe any shift occurring within you and how this will shape your next conversation.
