It’s very important to understand what your purpose is when you set out in the job market. For some, it might just to be earning as much money as they can with their skillset while still retaining a comfortable quality of life. For others, it might be commissioning in the air force so they have the chance to fly some of the coolest fighter jets in the world. Both are valid, though, of course, both also require very different career strategies.
The biggest mistake you can make is to try and achieve success that you’re not interested in. For example, it might seem like the height of success to work as a doctor in a hospital thanks to how many people you help and how much you can earn, not to mention the prestige of the position. But you might not be happy with that many work hours a week, the incredible responsibility on your shoulders, or dealing with sick people day in and day out.
So, a question arises. What are your markers of success? Understanding that can help you in various ways. Let’s explore how, below:
The Milestones Of Success
Success isn’t necessarily a singular destination, but a step on the journey. For example, hiring your first employee can be a fantastic place to start. It shows that your operation is expanding and that you’re supporting the livelihood of another person who also believes in your idea. That’s a form of success that leads to other success. For others, a milestone might be earning that one-hundredth-thousand dollar, justifying the purchasing and framing of 5g + gold nuggets in the office, or getting a billboard on Times Square. Little increments of success like this are great because they inspire you to get after the next mountain and climb it.
Making Change
Sometimes, success has absolutely nothing to do with the amount of money you bring in. This is often why a doctor is considered to have the highest success – they might not out-earn a Fortune 500 CEO, but the positive impact they have, quite literally saving lives every month, is undeniable. Perhaps you want to make an industry more sustainable, center the consumer in everything you do, spread culture, or introduce a cuisine to part of the market. Maybe you want to limit the effect of agriculture by promoting vegan products. Whatever is important to you can serve as a constant engineer of success, and following such a purpose can be inspiring.
A Happy Life
Too often we can implement many qualifiers on what we do and why we do it, but it all comes down to one truth – are you happy in your lifestyle? Now, this isn’t always that simple. For some, they have to work two jobs to put food on the table and keep their household going, especially if they’re a single parent with people to take care of. Not everyone can just work a part time job in cheap accommodation and leave it at that. But focusing on what makes you happy, be that caring for others, finally engaging in a field you enjoy, or developing a career more than a simple job can be end results to aim for.
