Nick Gallo welcomes, TedX speaker, chief culture officer, and chief civility officer, Sejal Thakkar to the show! In this week’s podcast, Nick and Sejal chat about unconscious bias, why organizations should create a psychologically safe work environment, negative connotations associated with certain words, and so much more!
If you’re a CEO or top level executive, you should listen to the advice Sejal Thakkar offers for creating a positive company culture! Sejal also gives her younger self a piece of advice that everyone should apply to their careers! 💡
“The piece of advice I would give young Sejal is, don’t be so rigid in your plans, right? Like, I followed the traditional go to law school, be a litigator. … I would tell myself, allow yourself the opportunity to kind of go with where your passion or your heart leads you and don’t be so tied to the plan of what’s expected of you, versus just being you and letting that sort of unfold. … I would tell the leadership teams to really empower their employees on unconscious bias.
That would be my advice. … People are running your processes, they’re the ones that are making these decisions. …
I’m seeing a lot of people saying, throwing a lot of dirt at unconscious bias trainings and how they don’t work. First of all, nobody is saying one unconscious bias training is going to solve the world’s problems, right? … When we’re doing this work, it’s because it does work. It works in the sense of its opening perspectives. It’s opening people to different ways of looking at themselves.
So, my tip would be for every organization to empower people with this knowledge and let them know that they have to do the work on their own and give them the space to be able to do that work.
That is going to solve so much and create better cultures just on its own.”
