The detours in life can be small, medium or large in size and can include a variety of events. On my last detour, which was 100% unplanned, a person entered my life that was never expected.
The cost of that adventure was about 30 minutes of my time and $6 for two cups of coffee and an original world famous Arbuckle Mountain fried blackberry pie.
What was gained from the surprise?
Every adventure generates at least one memory or more. Never could I imagine meeting a new friend that allows me to enjoy a great cup of coffee and conversations only a few in the world can generate.
Can you take a detour on your next trip?
Be prepared. My kids use to laugh at my extras for a day trip, but we were always prepared. They would say, “We can do that, because mom has it in the trunk!” Even today, when I travel by myself and I detour, I can hear them say, “Ya, we got that, let’s go.”
Here’s my economic tips for unexpected trips.
Things I Keep in My Trunk
Carry a cooler in the trunk for unexpected buys of food that must remain cold until you reach home or back to the hotel.
Bring a change of clothes – sweaters, sweatshirt, jogging pants, shorts, swim suit, t-shirt, and a sun dress.
Bring a change of shoes – sneakers, hiking boots, and high heels. I always wear flip flops.
Bring a laptop in your brief case with paper and pens.
Bring water and snacks.
Stash away extra money in the deep part of your wallet for additional or unexpected cost.
Bring a blanket.
Bring sunscreen and aspirin.
