The Way I Want to Believe

I do my very best to listen to the people that I’m talking to take in what they are saying because it’s important, otherwise they wouldn’t be saying it.

Words have power. Knowing this means that I need and we need to be careful what we say when we say it. That’s a great lesson I have learned through this process of talking with these people who spend their lives in the process of personal transformation.

The other thing that I have learned and it has been a very gratifying experience, that I can ask my guests the hard questions about what’s going on today, whether it be race relations, gender issues, or staying safe during this pandemic. The beautiful thing is, they have been extremely responsive, as well as, grateful that I’m asking the questions that would otherwise be considered uncomfortable. I have found that we must start by asking the uncomfortable questions in order to understand one another. Stop with the clichés and the old saying. Start talking with people eye to eye. Don’t be afraid to ask the tough questions from a position of wanting to understand, because I believe the person you are talking to and asking the questions is grateful that you are that concerned, you would put yourself on the line as it were. Be honest, be respectful, and be true to yourself and the people that you talk to.

Eileen: Who has inspired you in your life and why?

Richard: The ones who inspire me or those who go above and beyond what they’re ever asked of and sometimes they’re never asked but they do anyway to help others. So, I guess at the top of the list would be my parents and my siblings. I’ve had good friends over the years who have been there to help me and that is quite inspiring to me that they would think that much of me to support me.

The literally thousands of people who have helped me along the way in my career and in my relationships and just in my life. I would not be where I am today if it were not for all those people.  I’m also inspired by those who overcome what I refer to as perceived limitations to achieve great things in their lives. Whether anyone else thinks that they are great things, it only matters they believe and know that they have achieved a great thing.

I only hope that through my life, the things that I talked about and that I stand for, believe, and know, that I can inspire others to Greater Works as well.

Eileen: What is your favorite quote and why?

Richard: It’s hard to choose just one. But I will do my best to hold it down to a select few.

The first one is, “work with what you have until you get what you want.”

I learned of this principle when I started in broadcasting. Many times, I would be working at a station with 5, 10, and 15 year old or older equipment. I then started to work for stations that were a little bit more modern but still considerably behind the curve. However, I still got the job done and I was still able to produce I was still able to work with the clients and the advertisers to produce what I felt was quality programming, commercials, and production. Then I started working for stations that had more modern equipment and were more state-of-the-art.

The next quote that actually ties into that last quote is, “it’s the details that will make you or break you.”

A lot of people feel that they need to handle the big stuff and in reality, it’s the little things that care of the big things. And if you take care of those little things then you will succeed, move forward, and evolve. If you don’t take care of the details, the little things, then you’re less likely to accomplish your goal and or live out your life’s purpose in a fulfilling and satisfying way.

The last two quotes are mine. This last quote that I will leave you with has stayed with me to help keep me humble and curious. “It is better to begin in doubt and end in certainty than it is to begin in certainty and in doubt.”

In every area of one’s life, physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual, there are situations where we think we know the answers, we think we know the truth, we think we know the way. When in reality, we don’t, but it’s our ego that gets in the way and tells us that we are absolutely one hundred percent certain of a given belief or truth or even fact as we might call it. And so, we don’t seek out guidance, mentorship, support, encouragement, and inspiration from others. Why do we need them if we have all the answers?

I would say that all three of these quotes are tied together in a nice neat package that at least for the present works well for me. I guess I have to add a fourth quote, I never put anything on anyone else when I am discussing such matters.

If I make a statement about the way I want to live the way I want to think, and the way I want to believe, I always state that it is for me and I do not put that on anyone else. It is up to them to make their own decisions, to come to their own conclusions.

If they come to me for advice and support, then I am more than happy to offer it and at the same time remind them that it’s my perspective. And hopefully, just as I asked listeners to the radio broadcast podcast to come to the table and partake of those things that resonate with them, I say the same to that person who solicits my input. But in the final analysis, it is always their choice. And that’s what it comes down to as I write about in my book, Choices, Five Steps for Living. We all have choices, even if we choose to use and take someone else’s advice, we are still the ones who are making the choice. It’s all up to us.

So, work with what you have until you get what you want and remember that it’s the details that will make you or break you and begin in doubt an end in certainty to maintain your curiosity about life and then make your choice.

Eileen: What legacy would you like to leave that has a positive impact on the world?

Richard: I would like to think that the interviews themselves would be that Legacy or at least part of the Legacy and then I would leave behind what would assist others in transforming their lives through the words that are spoken in the emotions that are shared and the similarities that we all have even in our differences.

I had thought that maybe I would leave a legacy of children, but the universe has had other plans. And of course, I am speaking of biological children. However, I have tried to share with the young people that I have associated within the last 30 or 40 years of my life some of the lessons that I have learned and some of the ways that I have wanted to work and play together for the common good. So that everybody benefits not just me and not just them.

A case in point is when my first wife and I bought a house in Phoenix Arizona and it was a double-wide carport with a basketball pole to one side that allowed for the opportunity of playing basketball. I went out and I bought a backboard and I painted it purple and orange for the team I was most excited about, the Phoenix Suns. I put it up and I allowed the kids to come over and play and I would even play with them. I would always remind them that this court is fore playing not competing. This isn’t the NBA or the NCAA. We are here to have fun to enjoy ourselves and to learn how to play basketball better.

I thought they understood. However, one day I came out because I’m getting ready to head for work and found that the backboard was broken because someone had hung on the rim. The backboard was only made of fiberglass. No one came forward to accept responsibility, so I took it down and never put it back up. At that time, I was very disheartened.

  3. In keeping with the tradition, Ms. Eileen, you have done yet another remarkable interview. It is not only exciting but also equally absorbing as well. I can relate to almost everything Richard mentioned here, except for one.

His crucial message regarding the big stuff resonates with me, starting with my teenage years. As I was growing up, my father hammered the same thing into my head: “Always read in-between the lines because what the large letters give, the small ones take away.”

Words of wisdom: “We need to spend time meditating, listening, and following the guidance that we are given from moment-to-moment every day.”

Richard’s favorite quote: “work with what you have until you get what you want.”

The following statement is unpalatable for me. “I thought that human beings were a lot kinder, and it turns out that under the right circumstances, you might say they are selfish, greedy, and self-absorbed. They may claim that they’re doing it for their family, but they have no thought for others and their families. “

My personal experiences continue to be in stark contrast to the same, right from as far back as I can remember. However, there are always exceptions.

Won’t you agree with me, ’family is like fudge, mostly sweet, with a few nuts?’

Thank You, With Warm Regards, and A Prayer For All
