Rapport is the feeling of trust and comfort we have when we’re with someone who knows, hears, understands, accepts, and values us. Some people call it chemistry. It is usually the result of a close association between two people who have had shared experiences or who share a common philosophy or background. Rapport signals a relationship exemplified by affinity, alignment, harmony.

Sometimes rapport comes quickly—often because of some or all of the factors mentioned above. Sometimes it’s created by shared interests or tastes– we belong to the same club or organization, we like the same music, we both chose the same color shirt today, we’re both vegetarians.

How to Achieve Rapport with Anyone

Even though we may not agree with the content of the other person’s point of view, we can learn to achieve a state of rapport with him/her if we choose to emphasize the commonalities you share, instead of the differences between you. You can practice this even if the similarities are superficial. You may find that just in the seeking of similarities, you will experience a shift in perspective.

When you practice this attitude, you can reduce resistance, objections and antagonism, and create rapport more quickly.  And you are becoming a rapport and influence expert.
