Thanks to my Dad, I am fortunate in having four volumes of ‘Cartoons of Punch’. Printed in 1906, this collection of cartoons from the late 1800s really does take you on a journey into the past and is typically political.
A political theme has always been a driving force of Punch, creating cartoons inspired by sometimes controversial events orientated around Britain, The Empire and local parliamentary happenings; Often adopting an exceedingly sarcastic view of politicians, complete with cartoon resemblances, using animals with human heads and torsos. Rather humorous!
Featured in newspapers and in tune with particular events, even today, Punch really does create much humour, especially describing highly pertinent comments regarding politicians.
‘Punch and Judy’ – rather famous. Puppets! Especially at fairgrounds, which are a joy for children.
Queen Victoria was featured in a number of cartoons, but always in a positive way. Never becoming directly involved in the political landscape.
When turning the pages of these awesome volumes.
Naturally each cartoon unique, taking my imagination back to what life must have been like during Queen Victoria’s reign. Quite dramatic.
