I had lunch with my friend Melanie. “Tell me about your job,” I said.
“Ah, my job,” said Melanie. “What would you like to know?”
“Do you love it?” I asked her.
“I don’t love it,” she said. “My boss is on the downslope in his career. He doesn’t care about growing the business, but that means that important and necessary things don’t happen. Our clients get frustrated, and I end up holding the bag.”
“That’s hard on you,” I said.
“Yes,” said Melanie. “There’s no forward path in my company.”
“Do you think about changing jobs?” I asked her.
“I think about it, but –” Melanie stopped. “It seems like such a huge undertaking, to job-hunt again at my age.”
“Your age!?” I exclaimed over my salad. “You might be one year older than me.”
“I’m tired,” said Melanie.
