The dreams I dream
Are simple things
Set like pieces on a chessboard
Everything is peaceful
Even though I know
The world is anything but
But these are the dreams I dream
And not the bone-chilling reality
Of fear and war
Of left and right
Of guilt and innocence
Of fire and ice
In the dreams I dream
The sky is always clear
The sun is bright
But never too hot
The people talk
But I can’t hear them
Maybe it’s because
Nobody really has
Much to say any more
We have all been talking
For too damn long
The dreams I dream
Are tiny plays that take place
In a world where there
Are always mountains in the distance
And the faint sound of animals
Through the restless rustling trees
The dreams I dream
Are never violent or troubling
Enough to bring me awake
In a cold sweat
The dreams I dream
Are filled with dazzling details
That elude me after I wake
All they leave are traces and hints
Like a radio trying to pull in
A faraway station
In and out the picture voices go
Drowning in the subtle static
Of my overworked mind
The dreams I dream
Start out with the best
Of intentions, but somehow
Lose their way inside the
Rambling muddled maze
Of my subconscious
And I keep thinking
Yes, this would be a good one
To remember
A big idea for something
But they are only dreams
And they can go
From concrete to abstract
In the space of a nanosecond
And just like that, they do
And I am left
Right where I was
Before I started
Struggling to remember
All that that has eluded me
In the dreams I dream
Jim, great storytelling my friend. You had me from The dreams I dream and my mind open to receive your story.
Thanks Simon…Next to being able to remember them, which of course, is next to impossible. This exposition on them is about as close as I get to really touching them again.
Dear Jim,
To say thought provoking would be putting it lightly. Your words take me on a journey, ultimately trying to recall dreams that at the time were as clear as the sky but on awakening, frustrating illusive. I can relate to dreaming various dreams and in the morning try to ‘re-visit’ a particular one because it was a great experience. No such luck! I occasionally experience ‘flying dreams’. On awakening, I try so hard to return; very rarely materializes. Really super, Jim.
