The Dreams I Dream

The dreams I dream
Are simple things
Set like pieces on a chessboard
Everything is peaceful
Even though I know
The world is anything but
But these are the dreams I dream
And not the bone-chilling reality
Of fear and war
Of left and right
Of guilt and innocence
Of fire and ice

In the dreams I dream
The sky is always clear
The sun is bright
But never too hot
The people talk
But I can’t hear them
Maybe it’s because
Nobody really has
Much to say any more
We have all been talking
For too damn long

The dreams I dream
Are tiny plays that take place
In a world where there
Are always mountains in the distance
And the faint sound of animals
Through the restless rustling trees
The dreams I dream
Are never violent or troubling
Enough to bring me awake
In a cold sweat

The dreams I dream
Are filled with dazzling details
That elude me after I wake
All they leave are traces and hints
Like a radio trying to pull in
A faraway station
In and out the picture voices go
Drowning in the subtle static
Of my overworked mind

The dreams I dream
Start out with the best
Of intentions, but somehow
Lose their way inside the
Rambling muddled maze
Of my subconscious
And I keep thinking
Yes, this would be a good one
To remember
A big idea for something
But they are only dreams
And they can go
From concrete to abstract
In the space of a nanosecond
And just like that, they do

And I am left
Right where I was
Before I started
Struggling to remember
All that that has eluded me
In the dreams I dream

I have been a writer since the age of 14. I started writing short stories and poetry. From there I graduated to writing lyrics for various bands and composers and feature-length screenplays, two of which have been produced. I had a  20-year career in senior positions in Canadian and multi-national agencies and a second career, which began in 1989, (Onwords & Upwords Inc), as a strategic and creative resource. Early in 2020, I closed Onwords & Upwords and effectively retired. I am now actively engaged, through blogging and memes, in showcasing businesses that are part of the green revolution. I am also writing short stories which I will be marketing to film production companies. I live with my wife, Heather, in the beautiful Niagara Region of southern Ontario, after migrating from Toronto, where I spent most of my adult life.

  1. Dear Jim,

To say thought provoking would be putting it lightly. Your words take me on a journey, ultimately trying to recall dreams that at the time were as clear as the sky but on awakening, frustrating illusive. I can relate to dreaming various dreams and in the morning try to ‘re-visit’ a particular one because it was a great experience. No such luck! I occasionally experience ‘flying dreams’. On awakening, I try so hard to return; very rarely materializes. Really super, Jim.
