More than 25 years ago I came across a Shaman living high in the Colorado Rockies, and enlisted his sagesse in doing something called a color chart for me; an assessment of my life’s work and unique strengths based on 7 colors I chose intuitively and spontaneously, which he then interpreted according to native American tradition.
One of my choices, almost to my surprise as I had been the kind of teenager who wanted huge pink and orange flowered wallpaper on every wall of her bedroom, was the color gray. When the Shaman informed me that gray represented friendship to the native Americans, however, something clicked in my consciousness, and it has been one of my favorite colors ever since, a frequently used stabilizing and balancing presence in my overall brightly colored abstract art.
I wrote a poem this morning as I was headed out for my first hike of the day that reminded me of this encounter. As different shades of gray are of course made from combinations of black and white, it occurred to me that, as human beings, it would behoove us to be mindful of this fact as we strive to evolve into a new way of being and living together peacefully in our world.
Alone in the world
at One with the Universe;
paradox embraced
Pain and joy merging
in the pure, perfect presence
that rests beyond form
Realization…
result of rainbows followed
to colorful ends
As black and white meet
on the nearby horizon
of new beginnings.
