Teamwork Makes The Dream Work

Employees are the heartbeat of any modern business. This is why unlocking their full potential should be a priority for all entrepreneurs. Many hands make light work, and a team that performs to its maximum capacity will provide a far stronger platform to build upon.

The individual and collective successes of your team will bring huge success. This includes increased efficiency, better customer relations, and so much more. While this task requires an ongoing commitment, building your strategy can be simple. Break the process down into the following elements for optimal results.

#1. Building The Strongest Possible Team

The harsh reality of running a team of employees is that you won’t get very far without great candidates. If they do not boast the rudimentary talent and traits for success, subsequent moves will feel futile. You wouldn’t enter the marketplace without building a target consumer profile. A similar process can be used to ensure you find the right employees.

Whether handling the recruitment yourself or hiring an agency, you must find the right people. Personality traits are essential. They impact everything from staff morale and motivation to client interactions and problem-solving. Experience and education provide a solid foundation. But you must not ignore your gut feelings regarding whether they are right for your team.

Given the limitations that hiring the wrong people can place on your progress, it’s vital to double-check everything. You should remember that employees are human. As such, pre-employment medical assessments are an integral feature that results in a stronger team. No business owner wants to face preventable high staff turnover rates.

In today’s climate, it is equally important to hire a range of employees. Different age groups, genders, ethnicities, and social backgrounds should be represented. Otherwise, a large section of your prospective client base will lack the source of familiarity they crave. Finally, for the sake of budgets and time savings, outsourcing a range of jobs can be highly rewarding too. It’s an old cliché, but your team is only as strong as its weakest member. Do not forget it.

Recap:

  • Know what you want from an employee.
  • Analyse personality traits, as well as skills.
  • Confirm their capabilities to complete the work.
  • Use remote freelancers and alternative methods.
  • Build a diverse team.

#2. Championing Clear Communication

Great communication is a core feature of any effective company. Without it, the damage can impact productivity while also increasing the likelihood of mistakes. Time is one of the most valuable resources at your disposal, and championing clear communication allows you to utilise it to the max. Firstly, you must interact with all staff members to gain an employer-employee bond.

You want employees to feel comfortable around their colleagues, and confident around customers. The onboarding process can have a telling impact on welcoming new staff members to the team. Meanwhile, awaydays and out-of-office bonding can support the kind of atmosphere you want to build. As an employer, you must also identify and stamp out workplace bullying.

Technology plays an integral role in modern business, which is why you must provide all staff members with the right tools. Whether using team messaging Apps, video conferencing, or project management software is up to you. These features will save valuable time while also helping employees same on the wavelength with colleagues. This includes interdepartmental connections.

Communication facilities are primarily aimed at building time efficiency. Therefore, another top trick is to cut your team meetings to 30 minutes. This is a method used by some of the biggest firms on the planet. It encourages employees to stay focused on the primary topic and objectives. Crucially, it enables them to get back to work ASAP.

Last but not least, it’s OK for employees to work alone. Encourage them to show their initiative.

Recap:

  • Build strong employer-employee bonds.
  • Encourage positive personal relationships.
  • Use modern tech to your advantage.
  • Avoid unnecessarily long meetings.
  • Promote confidence and proactive actions.

#3. Create Positive Surroundings

Our surroundings can have a significant impact on our moods, especially in the workplace. Therefore, it’s imperative that you build a winning work environment for all employees. Otherwise, you will see negative impacts that affect morale, interactions, and general productivity. Go the extra mile to show employees that you care by creating the best workplace, and they will repay you tenfold.

Safety is the top item on your agenda. Prevention is always the best form of protection, which is why you must implement good health and safety protocols. Supplying all workers in the appropriate locations with goggles, hardhats, work boots, and harnesses is vital. Meanwhile, you must go the extra mile to remove trip hazards, fire hazards, and live wires.

The commitment to safety should also extend to cleanliness. Clean workspaces reduce the threat of illness, which can leave your team feeling depleted. Likewise, it can be a great way to promote a happier environment. Other ways to do this include using brighter colour schemes and encouraging natural light to enter the building. It can literally add fresh energy.

Positive work settings can also include staff break room facilities. A water cooler and coffee machine aid hydration, which will aid concentration levels. It also shows a genuine level of care that will make employees want to work harder. Further additions like a TV, microwave, and fridge will have a positive influence too. They are simple additions, but can improve engagement.

When all of the above elements are supported by good security measures, you won’t go wrong.

Recap

  • Focus on safety at all times.
  • Create a brighter and cleaner workspace.
  • Make employees feel accommodated.
  • Provide simple staff comforts.
  • Establish suitable security measures.

#4. Develop Driven Mindsets

A winning mindset is one of the greatest tools that any worker can possess. As an employer, there are several ways to encourage the development of a positive mood. Do this on an individual level as well as a collective one to unlock a far better team. Seriously, a little psychological understanding can be your greatest asset when managing a team of people.

It helps when employees are engaged with their work and have pride in the company. You can encourage this by supporting worthy causes or paying attention to the environment. When staff members are actively behind the brand ethos, they will subconsciously want to work harder. The fact it can actively influence client perceptions is another incentive. It can transform your future.

Employees wanting to work hard for the business are great. However, the truth of the matter is that most people get their motivation from personal rewards. As such, showing that there is a path for promotion and salary upgrades is one of the best things you can do. Besides, internal promotions are shown to build stronger teams. This is because senior staff boast familiarity with junior positions.

Small rewards and perks can keep employees engaged and on task. These could include going home an hour early, BYOD schemes, or free gym memberships. Moreover, multiple studies show that people react to praise and positivity. Simply reaffirming that they are doing things in the correct fashion can, therefore, become very valuable. Positivity is contagious and spreads across the team.

Work smarter, not harder. Your team will produce far better results as an outcome.

Recap:

  • Create a brand community they want to be a part of.
  • Provide short-term praise.
  • Provide long-term aspirations.
  • Lead by example.
  • Support individual and collective ambition.

#5. Never Stop Progressing

Once you’ve built the strongest team and managed to get them performing as you want, it would be easy to rest on your laurels. Don’t. The business world evolves at a rapid rate. Unfortunately, if you fall victim to standing stationary, you will get left behind. After all, other companies are reaching new heights every single day. Be a proactive pioneer, and challenge the team to be better.

The easiest way to build a more effective team is to invest in new tech and staff training. Automation speeds up many processes while also reducing mistakes. Interactive training is the best solution, not least because employees feel they are getting better. This ties in nicely with the ideas of motivation and incentives. Adding a competitive element helps too.

Furthermore, you can implement sales scripts and other tools to promote consistency across the brand. After all, the concept of developing the team is primarily designed to promote more sales. So, by focusing on a development phase that keeps clients in mind, you should see even greater impacts. Moreover, employees will see the difference, which should give them more confidence.

You should also appreciate the fact that employees were hired for their skills and specialised knowledge. So, if you want to know the best ways to help them achieve more, ask. They have a natural interest in their work and may know about tools that you don’t. Likewise, knowing that their opinions matter can translate to a better work ethic. If nothing else, it reduces your research.

When the business stays ahead of the competition, long-term success is assured.

Recap

  • Implement new tech.
  • Train your staff.
  • Focus on employee-customer links.
  • Ask employees what they need to work better.
  • Never think your work is done.

  1. Work is never done especially when you are a one-man team like myself. The great motivator for employees is money. I have seen and heard this dozen of times already. You can praise your employees until it becomes ad nauseam and while offering free lunches, nights out trips and more. If an employee is being paid less than a market value salary expect them to leave as soon as they receive a higher salary. The passive candidate is happy where they are until a recruiter like me whispers sweet nothings in their ear and they are on board with moving on. TEAM used to mean Together Everybody Archives More. Today the predominant attitude is what’s in it for me. Money is not the perfect panacea but when you have a hard-working employee who always has their nose to the grindstone but can’t survive on their salary they will become demoralized and eventually leave. There is so much more that goes into team building and employee retention but never forget the role of the almighty dollar. “There but for the grace of you go I.”-Kathy’s song-Paul Simon.
