As Gomer Pyle used to say on the Andy Griffin show, “Surprise, surprise!” Are these demonstrators really surprised at what President Trump is doing, or has done in the past 10 days?
He is doing exactly what he said he was going to do and a lot of people agreed with him that those things should be done. He has approved two pipelines, started building the wall at the Southern border, temporarily frozen immigration from those countries with a history of ties to terrorist groups (based on a law from Obama’s time), Frozen the continuing implementation of Obamacare, started reversing the drain of our jobs, taken steps to stop the violence in our cities, begun filling vacancies with qualified people, frozen most federal hiring to reduce our out of control spending, begun the renegotiation of our trade deals, established contact with other world leaders, and a dozen other actions. He has been saying that he will do those things for over a year now, so why be surprised? (By comparison, Bill Clinton said the borders should be tightened and the flow of illegals stopped back in 1995 but never did anything to fix the problem.)
I believe the only surprise in this flurry of activity is that he is actually doing it, and doing it so fast. Never in my lifetime has an incoming elected official, much less a president, done what he promised to do, and certainly not so rapidly.
Even those that don’t like what he is doing, must in fairness give him credit for doing what he promised to do all along. That is refreshing, whether you supported him or not. We should all demand no less from the rest of our elected officials at all levels.
The most common complaint I hear from his detractors is that he hates women and will take away women’s rights. I find it hard to believe that he hates women when I look at the women he has married. He certainly hates women that stomp on our flag, say they have considered blowing up the White House, or verbally attack him or his family members. But, then he isn’t fond of men that do those things either. Can we really blame him for that? I would like some of those women that are marching around with their signs to tell me just what women’s rights President Trump has taken away. Yes, he is openly against abortion, but he is far from alone in that position. Even a lot of women agree with him as does the largest Christian religion in the world. Oh yes, he is also against transgender restrooms and locker rooms. Are a lot of women in favor of those?
