Struggling to surface from deep slumber,
What on Earth has driven me awake?
A fire alarm one of three ringing out alarming calls,
The shrieking noise deafening me.
Which one is misbehaving I stand still, trying to hear.
Would it ring again no fear?
Back to bed I trundle, snuggling into cosiness.
Again I am blasted out of soothing sleep.
Not a move from my young man
His hearing aids are charging on the nightstand.
Enough is enough I have suffered enough.
A prod, a plea wake up and rise with me.
So in the hall, I stand waiting for the alarms loud command.
Of course, it decided to play a game with me.
I waited like a knotless thread, wishing I was back in bed.
Moving to the kitchen for a soothing cup of tea,
Yes, you guessed it, piercing clamour from the hall,
I rushed to find the real offender
Before silence hid it’s presence once more.
This is the one darling, can you reach it?
Though I am tall, a few more inches were required by my hero.
Still, it struggled to keep its battery with a magnetic grip.
We pulled together with fingers weak and arthritic.
It had to go we were not going to give up.
A triumphant cry got it! Followed by a laugh and let’s go to bed.
Snuggling down once more into the deliciousness of pre-sleep
The cows in the pasture across the river started their
Loud romantic serenade, their battery we could not remove
Just had to bury deeper, to once again become a sleeper.
Good night all, well I hope so.
