Stick and Carrot

In the US itself considered the emblem of the free economy, political power colluded with large private groups and is in reality increasingly dependent on finance. There is no doubt that there is an unhealthy liaison between large private groups and politics, which has been growing rapidly everywhere in the last quarter of a century. If you look carefully, any initiative does nothing but further increase the share of wealth managed by these political-economic elites, to the benefit of those closest to the shopping taps and to the detriment of all the others who will pay the bill. In the system that is being designed, small and medium-sized enterprises, often born from the creativity of young entrepreneurs who already no longer count for anything, are now risking total zeroing.

As is well known, Davos’ perspective and its leader with his friends, is the one of the “Great Reset” of the current economic-social-political systems to move towards a “New Normal”, a sort of global governance, where higher “control rooms”, constituted by supranational bodies, large financial and economic groups, global media, think tanks such as Davos, will assume the role of undisputed conductors, to decide where to go, by what means and how.

7. Now it finally makes sense.

Now the million-dollar question: How to impose such changes?

Well, believe me, I really don’t know what drives such people and their “snake” mentality – I mean how certain ideas are born but we’ve seen this “movie” before, in the history of dictatorships, but we have better savored it over the last two years, and it ain’t over yet.

In his well-known previous book, “COVID-19: The Great Reset”, the WEF leader wrote that the Covid-19 epidemic constitutes a “great opportunity” to “rethink, reimagine and reset our world.” The WEF leader underlines that beyond the facts, the reality, our human actions, and reactions (…) are determined by emotions and feelings: the narratives guide our behavior – meaning that with adequate storytelling, it will be possible to induce change from above a little at a time, creating consensus with a mix of stick and carrot.

The importance of “narrative” to drive change had already been indicated by the WEF leader as a priority in another of his books published in 2016 about the fourth industrial revolution, “The Fourth Industrial Revolution” in which the transition from narration to propaganda risks being very fast, and particularly dangerous if it is added to the control of financial flows, to increasingly rigid regulations, up to the very limitation of personal freedom of movement, as we have clearly seen in Europe but also in North America.

The implementation of the “Great Reset initiative” towards the post-pandemic Brave New World seems to proceed, with the “haste” recommended by the WEF leader, as a condition of effectiveness.

You know, when you dig and begin to discover that there is a close economic relationship between billionaires owners of important foundations, and large corporations, above all in the pharmaceutical industries – with the so-called fact-checking organizations that work on the most important social platforms, you start to understand that this whole thing is aimed at disqualifying and silencing any opinion that is not in line with the dominant narrative – and consequently, you understand that the game is nothing more than the umpteenth attempt by the power to legitimize itself, through conspicuous funds that serve to provide an immaculate image. That’s it.

8. A new dark age.

In conclusion, in my view, the “stakeholder capitalism of the twenty-first century” of the leader of the Word Economic Forum seems to outline a sort of techno-feudalism on a global scale. I might be wrong but I think that the Italian philosopher Giorgio Agamben was right when he said, quote:

“The capitalism that is consolidating on a planetary scale is not capitalism in the form it had taken in the West: it is, rather, capitalism in its communist variant, which combined an extremely rapid development of production with a totalitarian political regime. (…) What is certain, however, is that the new regime will unite in itself the most inhuman aspect of capitalism with the most atrocious one of statist communism, combining the extreme alienation of relations between men with unprecedented social control.”

Close cooperation between big finance, big tech, media, and large corporations is obviously necessary for the realization of the project: certainly, more taxes, because we will all pay the privilege of a few, to an extent that never happened in the past, less freedom (and less responsibility), less privacy and less individual choice. In a nutshell, a much reduced free will.

The “project” is there and that’s what they are doing – at least they’re attempting to do just that.

There are a range of obstacles, though, it’s not that easy despite their power, although it is clear that the more serious sticking points are distinctly human in nature, as for instance, Danielle Smith, brand new Premier of Alberta, Canada, who distrusts the World Economic Forum. She says she is canceling a health consulting agreement involving the World Economic Forum because she doesn’t want to have any ties with a group that brags about controlling the world, governments, and politicians.

“I find it distasteful when billionaires brag about how much control they have over political leaders,” Smith said at a news conference Monday 24th October 2022, after her new cabinet was sworn in. “That is offensive — the people who should be directing the government, are the people who vote for them – Quite frankly until that organization stops bragging about how much control they have over political leaders, I have no interest in being involved with them.”

Well, you know what? That little voice we all guard deep inside tells me that many should follow her example. You see, this isn’t a game and I am not insane, I’m not a complete idiot and I’m sure you are not either.

I don’t want to wake up one day, and hypothetically find myself immersed in a kind of authoritarian “liberal communism”, which intends to maintain a liberal-democratic superstructure, the way we see it today but reduced to an empty meaningless shell, while the resources and important decisions are destined to be increasingly centralized and made by a control room for the privileged few that is light years away from eight billion people.

Shall we look at it from another angle? Okay – It’s as if I were compelled to manage my company using a methodology imposed from above, without being able to discuss its content. To put it like that, it sounds like a dystopian perspective that is more similar to the one evoked by Aldous Huxley’s “New World” (1894-1963) than the one coming from Orwell’s imagination “1984” (1903-1950).

Maybe nothing will happen, maybe they will not reach the expected success, or maybe the whole thing will be de-escalated, but I made it pretty clear what I think.

Look, I have no moral primacy whatsoever, I am not a judge of anyone and I have no recipe for good living – all I know is that I gave all the right answers that life wanted from me and I never reached anything through chicanery or skullduggery or manipulation, so no matter how small I may be – frankly I don’t like people up top who despite having serious responsibilities continue to mock the whole world.

I am not attempting to convince anybody of anything. I don’t care, besides I myself have doubts – mine is just an invitation to reflect – I hope I’m wrong – at this moment, what I said above, although a possible hypothesis, does not seem a done deal, but if it were to actually happen and we will look for someone to blame tomorrow, we need only to look into a mirror.

I often used deliberately provocative mental images in this article – but I did it for the sole purpose of making readers stop and think.

There’s an old Latin saying of Christianity: “Those whom God wishes to destroy, he first deprives of reason” – well, I think so, in a way, in this case I do hope so, because all history shows us that any project contrary to the nature of man and the order of things is inevitably doomed to final failure eventually, but it can nevertheless cause serious damage for many years to come.

9. The triumph of torment in the era we live in seems to coincide with the power of nihilism and the nihilism of the power.

In my view, these situations and ideologies that seem to arise from the nothingness of lucid madness – do not arise by chance. I think these things are born when there’s nothing left to hold on to. When people feel like that, it is the ideal moment to benefit and achieve unspeakable goals. Yeah, “stick and carrot” exactly!

I believe people in general and especially young people are not okay at all today, particularly in the West, even if they don’t always realize it – not because of the usual problems or existential crises, but because of a disturbing guest sneaking about in their lives: nihilism, that is the belief that all values are baseless and life is meaningless. A radical skepticism that condemns human existence to a dimension of shocking temporary nature and believes in nothing, no loyalties, and no purpose other than materialism and temporary pleasures – now and immediately.

This “guest” takes hold of people’s feelings, confuses their thoughts, weakens their souls, and saddens their passions. In short, the world of today. That’s why people are confused about what to think today.

The secret to kicking this unwanted “guest” out is to always be yourself and follow your passions. This is fortitude. This is the strength of mind – but in order to be yourself you must be available to welcome with open arms your shadow, the truth of yourself.

I think people really need fortitude today because they are no longer supported by tradition, because the tables where the laws of human morality and ethics were engraved have been broken, and most of all because the meaning of existence has been lost and its direction has never been so uncertain and worrying as it is today.

But I wonder, if nihilism led us to think just about profit and loss, efficiency and waste, where real politics and above all ethics no longer exist and what matters is just money and profit – well then it is necessary to consider whether life makes a sufficient margin of meaning that justifies all the effort that goes into living.

If materialism reigns unchallenged and if you fail to give meaning to life and there is not even the short-term prospect of being able to find meaning in it – if the days go by, each one like the last, punctuated by nonsense and massive doses of insignificance, then we go in search of some anesthetic capable of making us insensitive to life – if nothing has value anymore then there are no rules and everything is allowed – as for example, and why not, the development of thoughts to which some people want to give the rank of theories when they are just twisted ideologies that totally go against humans and the natural order of things.

There is no philosophical thought or mathematical theory that unquestionably proves the utter futility of humankind in itself or in relation to the planet Earth and the subsequent outcome that anyone can make whatever they want of human beings. There are only reflections, assumptions, and ruminations which are aimed in most cases at giving the world a twilight interpretation of life, nothing else.

I believe that all this absurdity coming from the modern world is none other than an expression of frustration and resignation, which aims to erase the truth of human life because it no longer knows how to deal with it.

10. No more talk.

So in conclusion, when will we go back to normal?

“When? “Never” wrote the WEF leader. It is written in black and white, just take the trouble to go read and deepen what he writes – and what he writes is by no means reassuring.

As for me, I wish the WEF leader happiness and the best that life can offer him, but he can leave me out of his ideology.

What do you think? Has anyone else got any more thoughts?

Thank you.

YOU MIGHT SAY that Massimo advises big and small companies, entrepreneurs and individuals on how to craft digital strategies that get tangible results from their tactics. Which is true. You might even agree with few german managers who called him “gute schlepper” (good tugboat in English) because of his inner strenght of pulling people toward visionary and positive goals. However, neither of these statements would be completely true. The truth is that from his childhood, Massimo was fed and watered to be someone who relates to people, is constructive, multilingual, loves the life and looks at the future. And the most amazing thing that came out of his attitude is the ability of conveying the same feeling to others For nearly twenty eight years he traveled and worked in management consulting in eight countries. His thoughts, notions, ideas, speaking engagements come from more than thirteen years as an entrepreneur and fourteen plus “on the road” for Touche & Ross, Deloitte and PricewaterHouse. On his path, he learned a great deal about customer-driven strategy and transformation, digital marketing and design thinking, working on behalf of a-z roster of clients, e.g. IBM, BMW, Frost & Sullivan, SAP, Oracle, Fiat, Salesforce, Accenture, OpenMinds and many other SMEs in several countries and industries. Massimo lives (as much as he can) in the greater Frankfurt area in Germany. He loves his two kids, Massimo and Amelka, more than anything else.
