He was on the median
Holding the sign I see
The traffic lights were red
This boy he looked at me
A cold November day
The chill was cold out there
I seldom looked at those
With signs up in the air
But on this road today
Something made me look
Past the driver’s dashboard
Into this fellow’s book
The poster in his hands
Travelled past my door
This sentence heard before
Today meant something more
The rearview mirror showed
Pants that fit loosely
My heart within my chest
Spoke loud and clear to me
This youngster had a story
A young one still to be
I only knew the version
Where judgement had a fee
Who was I to know
What wasn’t really true
He didn’t ask for money
But smiled right at me too
I scrambled for the change
I had within my purse
Forgot about the traffic
I may have caused a curse
My hand to his I gave
Handing all my change
And said his words to him
His greeting I exchanged
“Have the best day ever”
And thanked him for this sign
It really was just needed
So fitting and on time
The lights that I had missed
He apologized to me
I saw in this a moment
An opportunity
From my open window
My voice to him I sent
I said that he was worth it
And this I truly meant
Behind the cardboard sign
A flash of light I saw
Something in him shined
A child to me was all
As I waited once again
For the light of green to go
Others started giving
Behind me in a row
Where the money went
Was no concern to me
It was better to be able
To change my own story
My heart was feeling joy
To help another giver
To the boy who held a sign
“It was the best day ever”
