Robots Replacing Food Workers?

Entreprenurial SpiritI recently read about a major food chain considering robots to replace employees. We can already see the start of this trend with computer screens being used to punch in your order. This is a huge concern for young people and summer jobs. Restaurants and bars are a huge source of employment for students.

This is a reminder and wake up for all sectors of employment. Business is changing and in order to succeed and not be a victim of downsizing, unemployment, underemployment, etc., it is vital for individuals to develop the mindset of an entrepreneur.

There is always opportunity everywhere for those that have this entrepreneurial mindset. Another recent article I read, shared the story of an individual that got an out of the box idea from the new Pokeman app craze. He is offering his service, driving gamers around town to find their points of interest, charging them an hourly fee. This is an example of someone that sees an opportunity and creates something out of nothing.

Another business owner decided to expand their existing service by adding a new product to their offerings. The new product was available in their existing location and although it was selling, they thought they could get a better result. They saw an opportunity and opened a new location to promote that part of the business. They have had their best month ever in the history of their company, simply because they made a decision to diversify and take a risk.

There is always opportunity and work for those that are not waiting for someone else to provide it for them. Successful entrepreneurs understand the importance of identifying opportunity, making bold decisions, taking action, and trusting their hearts. Most are average people that have big dreams and are willing to do what it takes to reach their dreams. They do not sit back and hope things will get better. They go out and figure out a way to ensure they do.

As ultra successful entrepreneur Richard Branson states:

“Opportunity favours the bold – this is a lesson that I learned early on, and have used to guide the Virgin story. If somebody offers you an amazing opportunity but you are not sure you can do it, say yes – then learn how to do it later!”

This is a mindset…a mindset that anyone can choose to develop….

  1. Debbie: I raise my hat to all that successfully become entrepreneurs, be they small or large. Of course not all those looking for part time, or temporary work, or a second job are in a position to establish their own business.

Therefor the hundreds of thousands that work in fast food outlets and restaurants can be adversely affected by replacing those jobs with IT and robotics. That is being largely brought about by the increased minimum wage pressure. There comes a point where those higher cost can no longer be passed on to the customer base, or absorbed by the business.

The “progressives” or “liberals” need to understand that there are consequences to pushing up labor rates.

    • I agree Ken, excellent point! Pushing up minimum wages, causes business owners to become more solution oriented to keep their business in profit. Employees need to develop a pro-active mindset to find new solutions so they are not the victims of unemployment.

    • Even without pushing up rates – a 24*7 machine is always going to be more efficient than a person …. if you can find the machine. You can go back hundreds of years to see that one coming – all that is happening is that it is happening faster and more jobs are being affected – check out Otis and what it is about to do to the truck driving industry … it is ZIPPO to do with minimum wage. We have failed to educate our workforce that this is coming – and the politicians are STILL lying to the citizens – the jobs are not coming back.
