Wow. It is entirely possible that we will elect a President who cannot get a Top Secret security clearance. Now, for those who may not be familiar with security clearances, here is how the State Department defines them:
[message type=”custom” width=”100%” start_color=”#F0F0F0 ” end_color=”#F0F0F0 ” border=”#BBBBBB” color=”#333333″]“Eligibility for access to classified information, commonly known as a security clearance, is granted only to those for whom an appropriate personnel security background investigation has been completed. It must be determined that the individual’s personal and professional history indicates loyalty to the United States, strength of character, trustworthiness, honesty, reliability, discretion, and sound judgment, as well as freedom from conflicting allegiances and potential for coercion, and a willingness and ability to abide by regulations governing the use, handling, and protection of classified information. A determination of eligibility for access to such information is a discretionary security decision based on judgments by appropriately trained adjudicative personnel. Eligibility will be granted only where facts and circumstances indicate access to classified information is clearly consistent with the national security interests of the United States. Access to classified information will be terminated when an individual no longer has need for access.”[/message][su_spacer]
Basically, they want to make sure that our national security is in safe hands; hands that will not divulge information that could, in any way, harm our country or our citizens.
That makes a lot of sense. Of course we don’t want to put our country or our people at risk by letting others, who don’t have our best interest at heart, know our plans or capabilities. If they know our plans, they can more easily derail them. If they know our capabilities, they can work to exceed them.
Now, if the world had achieved that peace that we all crave, and that some actually believe could be possible, this would not be much of an issue. But history tells us over and over and over that there are bad people who, whether for self-interest or just plain malice, do bad things. You can look way back to the time of Christ, or you can look at our world today. We have not achieved the peace we long for, which means we must be cautious and hold our country’s information close and protected.
I get security clearances. I had one, as did my husband and as does my son. My son’s security clearance took a longer time because he has a college roommate from a non-friendly country. Ultimately, the investigation proved there was no issue and his clearance was granted. His job leading a weapons platoon and being accountable for equipment is sufficiently important to require a clearance. I think we would all agree about that.
So here we are, ready to crown a President who, according to the Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, was carelessly reckless with government information. Director “Comey laid bare a litany of facts that amounted to a searing admonishment of her judgment, management and stewardship of state secrets.”
That is a scathing indictment. Judgment, management and stewardship. Wow – a President who we question those very leadership qualities that create trust that we are safe and secure in our country.
Did you notice that the excerpt above that defines security clearance comes from the State Department? Do you realize that, when an individual steps into a leadership role in a government agency, they become responsible for everything….everything…that agency says, does or writes?
But you know what? That she is running for President even with this dark cloud hanging over her, that’s not what bothers me the most. What bothers me the most is that any citizen of the United States would, in their right mind, vote for her.
