Purpose & Talent: The Incredible Duo

The person born with a talent they are meant to use will find their greatest happiness in using it.

–Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

I fully embrace the idea, nowadays supported by evidence in applied neuroscience to growth and learning, that talent is not “fixed” rather “it can be learned”.

Not only that. It can be re-learned.

The belief that we are born with a certain talent can be a convincing one if we consider that each of us possesses unique gifts and abilities.

During the early stages of our life, our primary motivators may get buried into our subconscious mind as a result of life’s experiences and the social influences that shape the way we see ourselves, and the World around us.

My journey presented me with opportunities to look at my talents from a place of higher self-awareness, enabling me to align them with mindful decision-making in the choices I make.

I love the above quote by Goethe: I read it as an opportunity to delve deeper, to move inwards, to reflect on what motivates us, what drives our actions, to “re-discover” something that we may have forgotten along the way.

By embracing our authentic-self, talents, and passions, we gradually move to happiness as a state of being that gives inner fulfilment and joy.

From that space, new possibilities come to us as we are honouring our calling and purpose.

  1. Thank you so much Carolyn!
I am so glad to hear that my reflection resonates with you.
I am fond of Dr Carol Dweck’s work on “Mindset”; Her contribution to the field of people development is remarkable. She inspired my article and the importance of journeying to come back to “ourselves”, sort of speak. I have woven in the element of “purpose” which brings the reflection to a different level.
Look forward to learning more about what inspires you and to engaging on this fabulous global platform and with the community.
    Best,
    Monica

  2. Welcome Monica!
Love that you have brought this conversation to the table with your essay!
This concept can be such a game changer if you choose to believe it is true.
I personally FAILED scissor cutting when I was in Kindergarden. I was taught to believe that I was not ‘creative’.
That story lived in me and with me most of my life. And then one day, I gave up the story and started doing ‘creative’ things… and my entire world opened up with new gifts and talents. #nevertoolate. Welcome Home!!
