Pound of Flesh
Rhetoric we fancy to tolerate and even tend to emulate
Hoping it will help perpetrators subjected to lacerate
In Shakespeare’s legendary play, “Merchant Of Venice”
Shylock is treated as villain for his legitimate devise
He made an agreement with Antonio
But Antonio treated it as an innuendo
Not forcing Antonio to comply while lending him money at his crisis
Antonio agreed despite despising Shylock for his own religious beliefs
Yet having no qualms to accept Shylock’s offer
Antonio is only focused for religious persecution where he has no room to condone
What a vile intention Antonio possess
Just to ruin Shylock for his legitimate process!
In due time failing to comply the agreement
Portia appears in the scene to rescue Antonio from his predicament
Resolving the dispute with an alibi to hoodwink many at large
Pound of flesh is allowed to cut
But not to shed single drop of blood
What diplomacy we poor people are influenced and forced to eulogize with eccentricity
Where religious majority devastatingly subjugating minority with sheer travesty
We brazenly endorse Antonio’s predicament
Shylock’s jeopardy hardly we heed with any sympathetic note of assent
Antonio ultimately evaluated as an epitome of generosity
We majority is triggered with sheer biased outlook of hatred towards minority
Making Antonio as cult of kindness
Shylock is treated as a villain, ignoring his entitlement of redress!
I wonder in present time
Who is Shylock and who is Antonio to define?
Developing nations are continuously falling into the debt trap
Instead of pound of flesh
They will be forced to deliver their blood for developed nations behest
Huge majority of developing nations turn into minority
Opulence of minority will dictate and reign in favor of sheer inequity
But perhaps it is the developed nations which will eventually play the swan song
Developing nations will dedicate and script their new identity in an immeasurable throng!
