Almost everyone you talk to expresses a concern, or outright fear, that the world as we know it is coming to an end. Certainly that is true of our country. Nothing seems stable and reliable.
Everything seems to be out of control. Boarder security, national debt, national and state budgets, the rapid growth of terrorist organizations, and the list goes on.
We are in a time where we could have a first in the White House. A female, or a businessman that has never held elected office. This following two terms of a minority in our highest office, though it is said that in reality Obama is only 25% minority.
In any case all these radical changes are keeping us somewhat unhinged as a society and individually. But, I would offer one other change that is potentially more deadly than any of the others we can identify. That is the total breakdown of fair and unbiased journalism.
In the past, major city newspapers and national news networks made a serious effort to stay neutral in their reporting and even their editorials. While some of these entities have been slipping more and more to the liberal/progressive side of issues, in recent months they have abandoned any effort to even disguise the shift. The Washington Post, the New York Times, and many other major city newspapers have totally shifted to the left and even acknowledge it. I believe it was the political editor of the NY Times that recently acknowledged his paper’s shift and said that it was necessary. There was a time when the talking heads on the major TV news broadcasts were kept on a tight leash. Even facial expressions were carefully scripted to avoid creating an opinion on the reported news items. Today Trump gets more negative air time that an attack on Israel, and Clinton’s Canadian charity scam and her health issues are glossed over or ignored.
Why is this shift in media reporting so important? Because that is where we get most of our news and that news gives us a basis (perhaps the only one) for forming our opinions and actions. If that journalism is tainted by personal opinions of the reporter, editor, or entity owner then we do not get the whole story or even an accurate one. Of all the dangers our country faces the loss of neutral journalism is perhaps the greatest threat.
