Note Of Encouragement To General Managers

As we approach the middle of yet another week facing the deadlines of yet another month, crossing thru the second half of yet another year, things have a way of blurring together.  So many people, deadlines, and staff compete for our attention.  Concerned guests, feedback distributed across social media in a less than pleasant light, and an ownership that requires more because you have proven to deliver countless times.  You are the leader of your hotel and everything has a way of making it’s way to your desk.  Oh, I forgot to mention the unannounced inspections from the Health Department, AAA, and the brand.  When it rains, its pours, perhaps making its way into the lobby or guest rooms because the roof needs to be replaced.  Yes, it was your fault because someone’s car was broken into and you don’t understand due to the coaching and counseling sessions you have to facilitate.

The life as a General Manager is a great deal of fun.  I do not mean that in a sarcastic manner or else I would have wasted the last 25 years of my life.  No, I simply mean that you have a lot on your plate.

There was a real pull on me to write a quick note of encouragement to fellow GM’s to let you know that we as a fraternity, truly understand what you are going thru.  There may be times you want to quit and try something else.  I would not blame you and would applaud your efforts if you tried. I have known quite a number who transitioned out, but for some reason, most make their way back into this crazy life.  Today, take a moment to really consider the impact you have in your role.

Your leadership is making a difference in the lives of those around you.

Your example is making a difference.

People emulate you even if they do not say a word.

Yes, the pressure is real but so is the reward of leadership.

What you are doing matters more than you will ever know.

It is going to be better.  The situation is simply temporary.

Your test is going to be an upcoming testimony towards inspiring new leaders.

Your setback is only a set up for your next challenge.

You have got this.

Yes, you will find a day off soon  (Smile)

Continue to count your blessings.  You are a Change Agent.

Let yesterday go.  Most everyone has already done so.

You are doing better than you and the last P&L may report.

This is making you stronger.

You are all that and then some.

Today, be encouraged thru any frustration you may be experiencing.  There is a reason you are in this role and it is your leadership that will make the difference.  Stop being so hard on yourself or continue to second guess your decisions.  You are the right person in the right role. You have the right handle on the leading your hotel.  It is no accident that you are in your current hotel dealing with your current challenge.  You are not alone even if you feel that way. You have a great number of people who truly understand what you are growing thru because they have or continue to go thru it themselves.

There are times when we question what we are doing in the midst of the chaos but stay encouraged towards strengthening your courage.  You are appreciated even if no one says anything.  Your gestures, kind words, and actions have such an impact to help others to keep moving especially when they want to stop.  Just take a moment and breath. The decisions you make are critical and you need to know that you are not alone even if you have to go at it alone. The situation will shift in your favor and help you to continue to appreciate why you got into this business in the first place.

I appreciate you even if I have never met you.  The Struggle May Be Real but so are YOU!!
