Come election time, no matter where in the world, the public at large is saddled with the illusionary power of its votes. With due respect for the painstaking process so laboriously conducted by related authorities, the innocent citizens are pushed to the brim of a mirage. They are rendered unaware of the deceit, the tomfoolery, the nefarious designs of their misleaders resulting in a power-grab beyond anyone’s imagination. Except for a few truly democratic countries, the majority ends up electing bullies to the coveted position of head of the government, or is that so? The current situation is no different. Might is right, the age-old dictum has manifested itself, to take an inexcusable toll on thousands of innocent lives.
One nuclear-powered bully has taken to ransom the entire universe. All other so-called superpowers are just sitting ducks, thanks to the crazy warning of unforeseen repercussions. What good is NATO, and where is the war preparedness of the “developed countries”? All their armed forces, the all-powerful radars, sensors, fire-power capable drones, the arms, ammunition, and other sophisticated paraphernalia is sitting like kids’ toys since no “leader” is capable of stopping the crazy monster, ready to impose the third world war on all of us. Dance of death continues to take its toll while we all watch helplessly.
Agreed, monetary sanctions have been imposed, bank accounts seized, air-space blocked, and numerous other superficial measures have taken force. Still, the mighty villain continues to wreak havoc, knowing fully well his threat has worked like a charm. Surely, the press is playing its part in giving all kinds of hypotheses surrounding a nuclear war. They are hard at work estimating how long will it take to wipe out millions of us, for being party to the election process that puts questionable leaders in the seat of power.
Taking a cue from the current situation, I am more worried about the Chinese President for Life. With eyes cast on Taiwan, threatening moves against India, deep economic inroads into the poor countries around the world, and of course, his nuclear capability multiplied manifold by the ongoing support for the rogue regime of North Korea, how can we ever stop this guy from following in the footsteps of Putin? Now that he knows all the so-called superpowers can be easily rendered powerless by a simple threat of repercussions, our misleaders have offered him another avenue to add further insult to the ongoing injury.
My question to the powers that be revolves around the wasteful expenditure they initiated or allowed to go on, in their useless arms race. A select group of countries developed nuclear capabilities, forcing the rest of the world to accept their supremacy. I would like to know, from those leaders themselves, did they ever care to develop the courage to use them? Did they NOT foresee the possibility of one rogue state taking all of them to ransom? If not, why? On the contrary, if any one of them was foresighted enough, why he or she is permitting the hostage-taker to threaten them all?
Where were all the smart brains and deep-pocketed heads of governments when decisions were taken in favor of one-upmanship? They did not feel any shame in vying for the first place in terms of amassing large, larger, and the largest hordes of nuclear-capable missiles. Do they feel any shame now since their stockpiles can gather all the dust that is out there in the Universe?
The devastating effects of a nuclear arsenal have never been a secret, and yet the wasteful expenditure amounting to trillions of precious dollars was hijacked away from constructive development by these short-sighted VVIPs. They know their security is paramount to their country, but do they ever put equal emphasis on the security of their countrymen; the proof is in the pudding, so to say!
I could go on endlessly, doling out my frustration through these meaningless statements, but the fact is NOT going to change. Why? Because we are almost as much responsible for the calamity as the oppressor. We chose leaders that enjoy sitting on their precious stockpiles of advanced weaponry, knowing fully well how one mentally unstable, power-hungry despot could wreak havoc left, right, and center.
I would leave you with one question: are you sure the Russian attack on Ukraine is the last we have seen where the world watched like its hands were tied in the back? If you think it is true, wait for the next oppressor to come wielding his arsenal with much greater might, in his quest to annihilate any opposition, no matter how strong.
It is a pity all the advanced systems at our disposal cannot take out one single maverick through a covert operation. What good are all the spies, the espionage experts, the gorillas, and the marksmen? Where are the drones that fired from the air on the Taliban insurgents in Iraq and elsewhere? Where are the commandoes that captured the world’s most-wanted terrorist from his hide-out in Pakistan, and delivered the ultimate justice in the form of a burial at sea? So long as they are away from the war zone, all is good for them. If the poor and the innocent are suffering in Ukraine, it does not matter to the Supreme Commander of the armed forces. He has every right to enjoy the bounties of being the leader of a superpower. His responsibility cannot be challenged because putting together the best resources, a powerful and decisive team of thinkers, planners, and risk-taking commanders for an all-encompassing, remedial action is beyond our chosen leaders’ list of responsibilities, right? Time to think again, I guess!
