I recently had a client ask me about Natalie, the Medicine Horse who got me into this crazy line of work. She knew that Natalie had passed away several years ago and wondered if I was still in communication with her, knowing that I frequently communicate with animals in spirit.
My answer is a little more complicated than a yes or no. With most of my animals, I find myself the happy recipient of a visit in my dreams, where my soul and that of my dearly departed animal meet up. I wake from those dreams feeling enormously satisfied, knowing that it was real in the sense that my essence literally met with the essence of my friend, sharing love and companionship once more, for even a brief time.
During her life with me, Natalie and I were very close and I could connect with her at any time, from any place, even when she was under all but the heaviest sedation.
With Natalie, I have not had those types of dreams post-mortem. During her life with me, Natalie and I were very close and I could connect with her at any time, from any place, even when she was under all but the heaviest sedation. As Natalie progressed into her twenties she began to insist that I start doing readings from inside the comfort of my house, rather than sitting in her stall when it was ten degrees in the barn. She felt it was essential to my training and learning to trust that our communication was not contingent on her physical presence. She was a wise horse.
She continued doing readings for another year or so before I could see that they were taking a real toll on her energy and decided it was time for her to retire and enjoy her twilight years hanging out with her son, Desi, and just being a horse. Shortly before I made the official decision to retire her, she informed me that she had set me up with a group of spirit entities who would take over for her, providing me with the same council she had always given. I called the group Team Natalie and leading entity was named Shembala.
True to her word, this team did indeed provide the same level of information and wisdom that she had, albeit without the fun of watching Natalie “do her thing.” When she crossed into spirit at the age of 28, Team Natalie continued to operate with the same efficiency as Natalie.
In the four years since her passing, I have noticed with more and more frequency that I will be talking to a client and I literally hear the answer being whispered in my ear. It took me a long time to realize that the voice was Natalie herself, back in command of things.
When my client asked me about our connection with the Medicine Horse in spirit I had to explain that unlike my other animals, where I feel them visiting or see signs, with Natalie it is different. It is a bit like explaining one’s appendix; you know it’s there, but you can neither see it nor feel it, but it is a part of you nevertheless. As those closest to me know, I have always had a very close relationship with God. I was a sickly child and spent long, lonely nights awake, unable to breathe, with God as my only companion. I never felt truly alone; I always felt God’s presence and was reassured that my prayers and dreams were heard, even if the answer wasn’t always what I expected.
Of course, most of us would have a hard time defining God or the Divine (or whatever you happen to call it!) as a particular object or experience. The experience is way bigger than I can define, and so it is with Natalie. She is so much a part of me and my existence that I did not even recognize her presence until one day it hit me full in the face with one of those whispers. It’s a bit like a mole that is a part of you, gone unnoticed until someone points it out to you or it changes substantially enough that your attention is drawn to it.
And so it is with Natalie. Her body is long since gone, but her spirit is just as wise and accessible as it ever was.
A very touching story Mary.
Thank you Larry. To say Natalie touched me would be a gross understatement. Other than my mother, no other has had such an impact on the course of my life.
Wonderful article Mary, I enjoyed reading it
Thanks Lynn!
