Being your True Self is the hope of many, but it can be scary too. How often do we sabotage ourselves from living into the truest expression of who we are because we are afraid? We worry that we do not really have what it takes to be our authentic selves. Michael Canfield had achieved the heights of being a musician, yet he went into a downward spiral of self-destructive behaviors due to his avoidance of painful memories.
What he learned is shown in this film. He says that being free means facing yourself so that you can let go of what holds you back and become all that you dream of being. “You shall know the truth and the truth shall set you free,” became a living statement for him even when he did not like what he saw. Facing himself allowed him to heal and to enter into the fullness of life and of his giftedness as a musician. His story is a lesson for anyone hoping to find their way to freedom by letting go.
A safe but obvious existence can cause apathy: every day we find ourselves doing the same things over and over, hanging out with the same people and looking at the same horizon.
In such a situation, where everything seems immutable, it is impossible to evolve. You cannot grow if you stay in the comfort zone of a simple and predictable life, where there are no real challenges or complex situations to manage.
But it’s not just a matter of changes and evolution. The great damage we do to ourselves by always staying on the same path, whether it is out of fear or stubbornness, is that we cannot understand if that is really the right path.
Those who never try anything new have no perspective, no objectivity. Often he doesn’t even have rationality, and this is the case of those who have never seen anything outside their small square of life and yet are sure that the place where they live is the best in the world. And then maybe it really is, but without a confrontation they can’t know. They can only delude themselves that this is the case.
It’s not always easy. But the point is to try something different. Stop stagnating in your comfort zone and explore alternatives.
