Leadership Lessons – From A Princess

Andy Allo spent 5 years in collaboration with Prince. She released her first album, UnFresh in 2009 and two years later, joined Prince’s New Power Generation as a singer/guitarist and worked with the legend on her sophomore album, Superconductor, making it to # 4. on the Billboard Heatseekers Chart. Andy has the voice of an angel alongside well-honed songwriting and musical talents. Watch the full interview with Andy here:

On Creativity

In common with many naturally creative artists, Andy uses strategies for creativity that can be modelled and transferred. In the interview, she discusses some of these. “Recipes” for increasing your ability to think outside the box are discussed in greater detail in the book “Brain-Based Enterprises”.
On Leadership
Andy mentioned Prince’s ability to “hear everything” in a performance and not just become focused on their own instrument. Leaders must be able to hear the whole as well as the specifics, whether in music or any other field. Listening is a hugely undervalued skill in leadership. Sometimes we hear but we don’t listen.
On Emotional Intelligence

Andy demonstrates high EQ and this was evident in her discussions on working with Prince. She also demonstrated her ability to respond to unplanned interruptions with grace and humour during one of the performances I witnessed where a member of the audience wandered on to the stage by accident. You can see Andy’s response in the film, which was both hilarious and an elegant way of dealing with the problem.
