Keepin’ ‘Em Safe: Protecting You And Your Employees

There is an incredible amount of pressure on employers, to treat their staff correctly. Working conditions need to meet specific requirements, and the employees themselves will need attention. It’s easy to slip up and make mistakes. But, the law will still treat you harshly, even in cases of ignorance.

Of course, the law differs from place to place. So, it’s extremely important that you do your own research. This post will help you to identify some of the areas that you will need to look into, but you’ll have to do the major leg work.

  • Contracts

Most places will require, for most long-term employment, a contract between the employer and employee. A contract is the biggest piece of protection you can have. So, even if the law where you are doesn’t require it; it’s best to have some sort of legal agreement in place.

Ideally, you want your contract to cover as much ground as possible. It should cover how much your employee will be paid and when, and also how much they’ll have to work for it. You should also include holiday restrictions, sick leave information, pension, your rights to dismiss them, and what they need to do to leave the company.

This will protect you and the employer, in many ways. Most importantly, it shows that you and the employee have an understanding. This means that no one can claim ignorance if you ever need to prove your integrity. In cases where you need to dismiss the employee, or if they refuse to do work, you’ll be protected. Stints in court can destroy small businesses, so they’re definitely best to avoid.

Regarding writing a contract, your strongest option is to hire a lawyer to do it for you. This will cost you some money, but it will help you to put policy into place and have no loose ends. For a more affordable option, you can generate a contract yourself online. This won’t cover everything, so it isn’t ideal. But, it will give you some protection.

  • Health & Safety

The health and wellbeing of your staff should be very important to you. You’re responsible for the places of work your employees have to use. And, as such, have to make sure that these areas are safe for your staff. Even if they’re working at home or in the field, you still have to show that you’ve done everything you can.

Using the help of health & safety experts like Ellis Whittam and Stephen King, you can create a secure and safe environment for your staff. You need to make sure that all preventable risks are prevented, and that all of your staff are trained to do the same. Even if an injury is another staff member’s fault, the company could still get the blame.

You can pay a company to come in and help you with this. They will help you to identify all of the risk areas and find ways to sort them out. Alongside this, they’ll also perform regular audits of your company, to make sure that everything is still sound. Training of your staff is covered, as well. And, lastly, they’ll provide insurance to cover any legal expenses related to health and safety. If you’re on a budget, you can do some research and sort a lot of problems yourself. But, when it comes to audits and training, it’s best to let an expert handle it.

  • Misconduct/Harassment

From time to time, employees won’t get on. For whatever reason, this is obviously a problem. Sometimes, these little things will escalate and become much bigger. You may also find staff members acting inappropriately, and even bullying other staff. These issues need to be addressed as soon as possible, to show that you look out for your staff members.

By putting policies in place and by making yourself available to complaints, you can solve most of this problem. Your staff need to feel that they can trust you. Not only that you won’t punish them for coming forward, but also that you’ll be professional in sensitive matters.

React appropriately at the first instance of misconduct or harassment, and you can avoid a lot of trouble in the future. You need to be particularly wary of sexual harassment, as this is often almost unnoticeable or simply goes ignored.

Put your plans in place before hiring any staff, and you’ll be ready if any does go wrong. Remember, you need to do your own research in something like this, as law differs from place to place.
