Do you have, or have you had in the past, the job from Hell? What made it so?
He stood before the pearly gates,
His face was scarred and old.
He stood before the pearly gates,
For admission to the fold.
“What have you done,” St. Peter said,
“To gain admission here?”
“I’ve been a hotel man, Sir
For many and many a year.”
St. Peter turned and rang the bell,
The gates swung open wide.
“Come in and choose your harp, my friend,
You’ve had your share of Hell!”
(Excerpt from “So Many Hotels, So Little Time”)
In spite of our best intentions and efforts we can sometimes find ourselves in that proverbial job from Hell. We hate it, we are unhappy, we are expected to do things that are below our ethical standards. When in that situation our entire attitude goes into the ditch. It affects our personal life and poisons our soul.
The end result is that everyone around us suffers. Our spouse, kids, friends, coworkers, and employees. In recent years it hasn’t been that easy to just chuck it and find another position. So what do you do? Do you just hunker down and live with it? Do you know what is making it so rough and can you do something to make it better?
Unhappiness breeds unhappiness. Is it possible that we become part of the problem? It is an undeniable human trait to instinctively blame bad circumstances and events on someone else. Do you think we fail to do enough self analysis in these situations?
