I sat on the porch
Thoughts wandering
Pondering how I’d lost my way
I looked up at a sky so blue
From the corner of my eye
I thought I saw you
I felt my heart race
As if it were off
Kilter
I remember how you’d say
Don’t watch me as I wither
Away
The wind swept up
So, I closed my eyes
And pretended but for a moment
That what was lost
Had also been found
In the confound of this chaotic mess
I couldn’t breathe
Or so it seemed
As the sun beamed onto my skin
I felt my heart race again
Unsure of where it was running
But sure of the steadfast persistence
To be
Anything I wanted
At that moment
In that space
Grateful
I took a deep breath
And opened my eyes
I felt a rush of enthusiasm
As the sky began to change
And the rain started to dance
Across my bare skin
Freeing me, caressing me
I embraced the rainfall
In my midst
I didn’t try to run
Or escape
There was no need for shelter
Only the aloneness
In the middle of nowhere
On an ordinary day
That reminded me
You’re never far away
So I slipped back to that space
In between here and there
And let my thoughts
Wander
Around the periphery
Past, present, and future stood
Eloquent reminders
Gathered but separate
Together but not
Intricately connected
I felt a presence
You cannot disguise
Goosebumps prickled my arms
And suddenly
The rain stopped
Dissipated
The sky decided to turn in
For the night
Moon began to rise
And in between the clouds
The light settled between
The middle of nowhere
On an ordinary day
Hopeful that in its slumber
Peace will find a way
In the Middle of Nowhere on an Ordinary Day
