I used to know America
Way back in the day
Before the left and the right
Became mortal enemies
I used to know America
When all the girls were Catholic
And addicted to mortal sins
And I was a sinner too
I used to know America
As the land of hope and opportunity
Always in good hands
Always showing strength and leadership
I used to know America
As the protector of democracy
And the bastion of capitalism
When that system still actually worked
I used to know America
When the wars in my lifetime
Sucked them in like pawns
In some devious Commie game
I used to know America
Through draft dodgers I met
Guzzling loganberry juice
At Crystal Beach
I used to know America
As the place where even a B-movie star
Could become president,
And start to ruin everything
I used to know America
When a million black people
Marched on the capital
Demanding nothing but a fair shake
I used to know America
When the oil supply that fueled
The American Dream was threatened
And more soldiers died to keep it flowing
I used to know America
When the carpetbaggers of Wall Street
Declared financial war on Main Street
And nobody really won
I used to know America
When a black man had to save
That country’s ass, and never
Got so much as a thank you, sir
I used to know America
When a fascist psychopath
Tried to get himself made king
And now lives a life fighting litigation
I used to know America
When the big plague got politicized
And just would not go away
And the death count grew and grew
And now the America I used to know
Has virtually disappeared
Drowning in the lava flow
Of irreconcilable differences
Spinning like a flaming top
Lighting little fires all the way
Along its erratic path to nowhere
But never burning out
No matter how much rain does fall
