How To Protect Your Mental Health At Work

Work is a big part of people’s life and unfortunately for a large portion of people, they are overworked and struggle with their mental health because of their jobs. This could be for a variety of reasons like overworking, being burnt out, bad management or simply not being appreciated and respected in your job. Especially over the pandemic period a lot of people struggled with their mental health a lot worse than normal and struggled more in their roles if they were working through the pandemic for example. Maintaining your mental health at work can be difficult as you may feel so busy you can’t stop to let yourself breathe for a moment but it can be done and it must be done. Here are some different ways to help you protect your mental health at work.

Take Regular Breaks

When you are sitting at a computer all day a lot of recommendations state you should have time away from the screen every hour, but a lot of people don’t implement this. This would be a great way to start, just simply go to the toilet, go get a drink or just go outside for a breather for 5 minutes then return feeling fresh and calm. It is also important when you are at work all day to take your full lunch break and not to work through it, you don’t always get paid for it and it helps break up your day. You can do one better by also making sure that you go off-site on your lunch and move away from the office, then you don’t have people asking you questions on your lunch or sitting at your desk eating your lunch and replying to emails. Take a walk, meet a friend for lunch and just take time to be with yourself.

Have A Good Work And Life Balance

This is another important element to incorporate into your life, you want to work to live not live to work. Be sure to finish on time, whatever you haven’t managed to finish in your scheduled work day will still be there tomorrow for you to do. By giving yourself this discipline you are making sure that you have enough free time to enjoy life, look after yourself and spend time with loved ones rather than just working yourself into the grave. Be sure to use all of your holiday days as well, sometimes if you don’t use them you can lose that time so if you don’t need to book it for anything in particular just use it for a day off and you can have a day to yourself to focus on your self-care and feeling refreshed for when you return to work.

Get The Right Support At Work

When you do face difficulties in the workplace or in general with your mental health your workplace must be aware as they should be trying to help you with this. You can start with your line manager, once they know what is going on they can see if your workplace can offer anything to help like counselling on-site, help with costs for therapy or offering some mental health days so you can get your head straight. If you find that they are not being very helpful then you can try different departments like human resources or unions. There are lots of unions out there and some are tailored to specific jobs and the issues people face like discrimination, poor pay and work-related mental health issues, so if you work in the construction industry see if there is a specific construction union you can join or if you work in a grocery store see if there is a grocery union you can join for example.

Make Sure You Are Looking After Yourself

Mental and physical health while different can sometimes be interlinked, so if you start looking after your physical body you may see some improvements in your mental health as well. The body is a complex and intertwined system so looking after yourself as a whole should be what you strive to achieve. There are some simple things you can do to help yourself with this. One of them is to make sure you are eating right, fill up your plate with lots of fruits and vegetables and nutritional foods which will aid your body. Filling your body with junk and processed foods will only make it feel worse and also means it won’t be getting the goodness it needs to function in the best way.
