How To Establish A Professional Online Presence

You probably have a social media presence or brand unless you have consciously been avoiding this.  This social media presence is what people will see when they look you up online. As the internet is forever, you need to know what is out there and understand that it can follow you for years.

When you apply for a job, your potential employer is going to look at your social media presence as part of their vetting process.  As this has become part of the hiring process, you need to know some important personal branding tips.  This will help you cultivate the social media presence that you want.

Have A LinkedIn Profile

Having a LinkedIn profile is considered to be a basic professional requirement in many fields.  If you have a non-traditional occupation, you might get away without having one, but you should still consider this for building your personal brand.  You do not want people to think that you are not current with technology and social media.

Evaluate Consistency

Do your resume and social media presence support each other? Resume writers at Arielle Executives say if the answer is no, that will be a red flag for potential employers.  If you are not updating your social profiles or including details that are on your resume, you could appear sloppy.  A major issue is if you have different jobs listed. This will make you look unfocused or potential employers might think that you are lying to them.  If you do not have much on your LinkedIn profile, you need to update it and add what is on your resume.

Consider Posting And Sharing Content

Social media is all about connections and you need to think about the doors you want to open by posting content.  If you have highly personal content, you will connect with like-minded people, but you could be closing the doors on others.  You have to determine what is most important and post content the builds your brand in the direction that you want.

When posting content, you need to avoid anything unprofessional, hostile or unethical.  Posting this content is a bad idea and will only end badly. This content needs to be kept off your professional profiles, but you should also keep it off personal profiles that can easily be linked to you because it will make things hard.

You should also avoid posting party pictures regardless of how much fun you were having.  They are not going to improve your employability. Before posting any content, think about whether you want your boss to see it.  If you do not want this, keep the content offline and away from your social media profiles
