How Do You Decompress?

I was getting a haircut recently and my stylist and I were talking about “stuff” and she told me how she was finally taking a weekend off after a year because she needed time for herself.

I thought about that and wondered how many of us make time for ourselves, (alone time, time to decompress). We all know we cannot be effective in business or in our personal lives if we don’t take care of ourselves first…

I asked her what she loved to do, travel, read, concerts, etc, She said she loved warm weather, being outside, she loved the water. I told her to hit the beach or take a boat ride. She said she would love to be on a boat but it would cost way too much to cruise. I said do you have friends who have a boat she said no. So I called a client and friend and he is taking her out next weekend from Chicago to Grand Haven and South Haven Michigan with his wife.

My point is there is always a way we just have to find it.

How do you decompress? I do it by reading …

My favorite way to decompress is by gardening followed by reading. It did not matter how exhausted I felt, being in my garden and feeling the soil go through my fingers was relaxing. I loved to use that time for meditation as well.

Unfortunately, due to joint pains I dont do it as often. So I fall back on my second favorite way, reading.

Norman, every night before bed I jump online and play a Scrabble game. Somehow after a long day that really feels like a winding down to make some words and then go to sleep! I feel it is a ritual, a staple, and something I have grown to need and look forward to. A great read, by the way!
