How A Good Education Can Accelerate Your Career Success

If you want to be the very best that you can be at whatever it is that you do, you will need an education. These days, you can’t get far in the job market without an education because we are living in the Information Age. Although, of course, the world of industry still exists, human labor is becoming less intrinsic to production and supply. Machines and computers can do repetitive tasks without boredom, unlike human beings whose nervous system consistently craves new stimulus.

In the future, automation will become the backbone of all economies. Buildings will be printed out instead of shaped by construction crews and the service industry will be served by robots. While this is still some ways away, automation is becoming an increasingly noticeable aspect of our lives. When you call to pay a bill,  an automated bill paying program will accept your money asking questions that a person would ask. When you go to the bank to withdraw money, an ATM machine in the lobby will do the work just as efficiently as a bank clerk.

However, this is not a dystopia because human beings will be valued for their intelligence and creativity. Our brains have 100 billion brain cells. We are far smarter than computers, but in a different way. While computers may be faster at calculations and information retrieval, they can’t imagine new possibilities. So the bottom line is that in order to flourish in the modern world, particularly in the job market you need an education. Chances are that if you do simple work, a computer will be able to do it better and faster and cheaper.

Additionally, depending on what it is that you want to do, often having a degree gives you an edge over those who don’t have one. As an example, let’s take a look at fashion merchandising, imagining what it would be like to get into it without a degree, with a fashion merchandising bachelors, or with a fashion merchandising masters.

Fashion Merchandising Without a Degree

It’s possible to learn on the job, moving from one retail job to another, taking on various roles. Over time, you will get plenty of experience, although some of it will be repetitive. It will take years to get good at fashion merchandising because you will be learning by trial-and-error, relying on good luck to be in the right place at the right time to seize the right opportunity for your career growth. Additionally, despite your years of hands-on experience, you may not be able to get the promotions or earn the income you deserve.

Fashion Merchandising with a Bachelor’s Degree

A Bachelor’s degree will accelerate your learning compared to learning through trial-and-error on the job. You will now find yourself on the fast track. You will learn the entire process of how apparel moves from a designer to the retail store and then on to the consumer. You will also get the mentorship and guidance that you need to practice your new knowledge within the working world through internships or work-study programs. As a result of everything working in your favor, you will now find it easier to get managerial positions and to earn far more than you did when you simply learned on the job.

Fashion Merchandising with a Master’s Degree

While a Bachelor’s degree will create a solid foundation, a Masters will help you move from a generalist to a specialist. You will learn in the classroom and through research. You will now research and analyze the fashion industry to find out what apparel or fashion trend sells the best. In addition, you will also research the most effective way to increase sales.

You will gain tremendous insight into how the fashion industry works behind the scenes. For instance, you will learn buying techniques and branding techniques; you will learn about textile industry operation and distribution logistics; and, you will learn retail management and customer relationship management. Since your knowledge and skills will now be highly valued by employers, you will get the promotions and earn the income that you had always desired.

While you can survive without an education, you won’t necessarily thrive. In business and in life, the more you know, the higher the quality of your decisions. The more educated you become in your career, the more knowledge and skills you will acquire to become an influencer in the fashion merchandising industry.

  1. The future still looks to university and post-graduate education: only those with high qualifications will be able to find a well-paid job with good prospects for future growth over the next ten years. I absolutely agree with the idea that a university education gives qualifying knowledge and, above all, learns to learn. And this is precisely the point on which I would like to reflect.
As new jobs and professions appear but we do not know the boundaries, nor what will be their evolution over time, I would say that the title of study in and of itself does not really matter, while the experience in the field can be very useful. Factors such as longevity of the population, systems and smart machines, a huge availability of data, the new multimedia communication technologies, the ability to be connected globally, and the like, will bring considerable changes and will require skills such as critical thinking, creativity, lateral thinking, social intelligence, intercultural communication skills in the field of new media, interdisciplinary knowledge and ability to integrate concepts from different disciplines, synthesis and identification of priorities, collaboration in a virtual environment. Managers and companies will need to draw on techniques such as gaming to create environments (virtual) that promote productivity and well-being and that can overcome the sense of isolation. If these will be the new competencies and skills required in the workplace, it will be strong the impact that will have on various professional aspects. Each will have to prepare for continuous learning, often self-managed, while the school will have to redesign teaching methods and curricula. Simultaneously, the business will have to adapt their systems for the planning, management and development of employees, as well as redesigning the organizations and work processes.
