Here’s How to Get Out of Your Career Slump

After some time in the same occupation, you might feel like you’ve reached a dead end. You’re hard work isn’t really leading to any further promotions, and it can even seem like you’ve mastered everything you need to know in order to excel in your field – or, on the other hand, you’re just not that interested in doing what you thought you would love.

Luckily, there is a way out of the career slump you’re currently in so that you can keep climbing and even go beyond what you expected. Here is a handful of tips to help you with snapping out of your current career slump, shake things up a bit, and get back to acing your week of work once again.

It’s the kind of stuff that improves your overall quality of life too, you know, and every little step in the right direction will help a lot.

Find something that inspires you

If you’re lacking the motivation you need to perform at work, it’s a good idea to find something that you know will inspire you. It is, of course, different for each person and what motivates your co-workers may not work for you – but you need to start somewhere.

Try to watch a webinar during your lunch break on a subject you’re interested in, for example, or look for a subject that you need to know more about in your current job.

The Internet has so much to offer if you’re willing to sacrifice a bit of your time and not learning anything while simultaneously complaining about not progressing at work is kind of like starving in front of the bread box. Just hit Google, type in the subject you have in mind and get to work.

It might be the boost you need to figure out what you really want to do with your life or perhaps just get that little spark back that makes you perform at work. Either way, it’s good for you – and it won’t really take up too much time either.

Consider jumping ships

If you can’t see yourself working for the same company in a year from now but actually enjoy working within your field, your career could benefit a lot if you just joined another company. They’re likely to offer you a nice pay rise, first of all, since you’re joining them with quite a bit of experience already – and you’ll be able to enjoy a brand new work environment.

Before you get started and stick your neck out to look for another job, you might want to go through the usual steps; update your resume to make it look reasonably fresh again, ask around among your friends and general connections to see if they know about an opening somewhere, and get prepared for those job interviews.

If you have something lined up as soon as possible, you won’t have to quit your job and walk around in your pyjamas all day at home while waiting for something to happen. Here is a couple of resume templates to get you started, by the way, so that it can look fantastic by the time your potential employer reads through it.

Remember to network

If you’re stuck doing the same boring job day in and day out and would like a bit more responsibility, on the other hand, there are other ways to make it happen as well.

The fact that we’re not able to climb up to a higher position and get a bit more responsibility can, after all, make us feel really sluggish at work. Just doodling around at your desk isn’t really going to make things better for you, though, so it’s time to get started on doing some real work.

Start by having a chat with your boss, for example, and explain that you would like some more responsibility. If he or she doesn’t think you’re ready for this yet, you’ll at least have a decent insight into what it takes and what they expect from you.

Try to seek out a mentor if you’re able to and learn from him or her. It should, of course, be someone who is a lot more experienced than you and willing to guide someone with less experience. Most of the veterans at your work should be happy to do this, though, so don’t let any shyness hold you back.

It will definitely give you the kind of boost you need to make your career take off a bit faster and you’ll be happy that you took care of this in a few years from now.
