Okay, we have now celebrated the country’s 240th birthday. We watched fire works, perhaps a parade. We listened to patriotic music, often performed by musicians that only know 4 cords on a guitar or can’t stay on key when singing. We may have even endured a political speech or two by some elected, or want to be elected, person. Those of course had high praise for the freedoms we enjoy, without mentioning their plan for further self enrichment.
Presumably most Americans know that the celebration is due to our breaking away from the control of England. Perhaps some can even say that it was due to “taxation without representation”, or maybe because the English didn’t like our dumping their tea in the Boston harbor. But were those really the core reasons for the revolution? I don’t think so.
It was about tyranny, arrogance, heavy taxation, onerous regulations, and self enrichment of the leadership at the people’s expense. Perhaps the same reasons that the British recently voted to exit the EU. Perhaps the same reasons that the French revolted, and that the Russians killed off the last royal family in Russia. Countless other examples could be cited in S. A., Central America, Europe, Asia, and Africa.
It would seem that elected officials and their appointed bureaucrats never learn. Only the names change, we still have the same issues in the US and quite likely elsewhere. It isn’t about politics. It is about the misuse of power, the tyranny, the self enrichment, the indifference and the absolute arrogance. Those traits, liberally practiced, result in heavy/unfair taxes, onerous regulations, crushing national debt and an absolute disregard for the well being of the electorate.
For any reader that feels such is not the current case in the US, look at the facts. Presidents and congress members impeached, defamed, and even jailed. That doesn’t even mention mayors and governors. It is also true that those so identified are a minor fraction of those that are guilty of the same and/or worse offences. Nor does it note the legal but unethical actions to pass salary increases, and special retirement and health care plans for themselves.
We are suffering a total disconnect between our governing officials and the citizenry. Does that mean that we are headed for another revolt? If history is a valid teacher then I see that as a real possibility unless there is a rapid change in the attitudes and actions of our federal, state, and local officials.
