Getting Your Message Across

The Basics of the Wrong Way

Mr. Noah, the wrong way to get a message across is to engage in criminal activity of any kind – and then, to try and justify that criminal behavior as:

  • “the only way we will be heard because we are so discriminated against.”
  • “the only option we have to be heard because we are so marginalized in society.”
  • “the way we are forced to speak out for our brothers because the United States prison system is just a continuation of slavery and racism.”
  • “the way we are forced to be heard because we are such victims – of everyone.”

That is a hogwash of excuses, Mr. Noah, for the age-old mantra of “wanting my will, my way, in my timing.” It’s also the old-hat excuse for the defeating mindset of “victim.” Please stop suggesting all of this hogwash through your meandering questions, which you never fully allow your guests to answer!

Wrapping Up the Message and Getting it Across

Disagreement, anger, or injustice does not justify disrespectful, criminal actions. And, Mr. Noah, just because an action is legal does not mean that it is a respectful action.

Here’s a great principle-based message you could be propagating with your questioning, Mr. Noah:

Before “acting out,” “marching out,” or “speaking out,” ask these questions:

  • Are your words and behavior respectful toward others?
  • Are your actions legal?
  • Will your actions bring about real change in a lasting way?
  • Will your actions influence or change anyone’s heart motive or beliefs?
  • If not, are you just slinging your frustrated junk all over other people – simply creating an ugly reflection upon yourself?

All of these principle-based questions matter, Mr. Noah, if individuals and groups of individuals want their lives to be influential in a positive way – and their efforts to bring about real, lasting change.

Respect is gained from others and influence is protected by behaving respectfully toward others. There is a way to disagree respectfully.

Mr. King, Ms. Parks, and Ms. Anthony serve as lasting, authentic examples of these principle-based truths. Their bold, respectful, and persistent actions brought about lasting social changes. And guess what, Mr. Noah, none of them paraded around the victim mentality of blame and shame upon others; nor did they engage in criminal activity that destroyed the property or lives of others!

Respectful Disagreement in Action

One more truth: Jesus Christ was our perfect example of respectful disagreement in action! Whether you believe he was a good man or The Son of Man, “the way He chose to get the message across” was an impeccable example of successful, respect-filled leadership in action.

There’s a great book that tells of his amazing behavior in the face of horrific opposition, injustice, discrimination, and even wrongful death! All of these experiences happened to him because of what He believed in, spoke-up about, and sought to change in His world.

And guess what, Mr. Noah? His “constitutional rights” were horribly violated! The government that granted him those rights through his birthright citizenship, and who was supposed to protect his rights, woefully allowed horrendous abuse upon Him. Did he respond by:

  • disrespecting the precious mementos and symbols of his country;
  • rioting in the streets;
  • burning the property of others;
  • looting the belongings of others;
  • killing innocent law enforcement officers; or
  • verbally railing upon any other person?

No, sir, those responses were NOT among His very “right way of getting His message across!”

So, you see, Mr. Noah, there is “a right way to get a message across.” It’s age-old in its approach. It requires us to lay down “Self,” seek the best interests of others, and learn the life and leadership principles of success.

All of the information about His Great Social Action and Leadership Success Plan can be found in the best-selling book of all times – The Holy Bible.

We know Reverend Martin Luther King and Miss Rosa Parks read the book – and learned its directives about the Great Social Action and Leadership Success Plan. As a result, Mr. Noah, they followed “the right way of getting their message across!”

Interestingly, some of the same dialogue and responses fit very well with successful principles of life and leadership.

  1. Very educational article with suggestions worthy of endorsement.
    All communicate, but not all can connect, that is to establish a link with people and to pass their message properly.
    To be an effective communicator I think we need to learn how to simplify our message, trying to adapt it to the person we are communicating with, also transmitting a gestural and behavioral credibility.
    Will we succeed in doing so in a world dominated by technology that is replacing the human being?

    • Thank you for these great thoughts, Aldo. Your comments always add value to the expressed ideas in an article. I appreciate that about your interactions online. In response to your question: I believe the overall communication skills of leaders will need to be very well-honed and intentional in the future in order to overcome (or even compete with) the impact of technologically-driven communications (as the primary source of communicating). It’s a digital communication world that has lost much of the heart and soul necessary for impactful, effective communications. 🙂

  2. I feel to get our message across we have to stand above the rest and be noticed. There are so many with so many platforms saying we must do these things and they quote a well known person, twisting that person’s message and philosophy to really dangerous ends… like rioting in the streets or causing bodily harm. In an age where the inmates run the asylum, we as leaders, must calm the inmates and give them a mindset to think and analyze to understand just what is really going on. But today there are just too many instigators that know how to push our buttons, know how to enrage us, know how to turn off our ability to think. And with some of us, what these instigators are doing is permanently changing who we are as people.
