Last night; most probably early morning prior to Nature’s light venturing to awaken the flyer, I experienced a ‘flying dream’.
As far back as I can remember I have experienced ‘flying dreams’. Should you look up such a phenomenon on Google, there will be various views and interpretations. In one type of dream, the individual is endeavoring to escape a situation; trying to fly away from perceived danger. The other manifests itself in providing the pure joy and freedom of ‘flying’. That’s my dream!
Flying dreams do not demand a powerful ‘launch’ or a rocket-type elevation. Usually, there is a gentle, effortless lift upwards; typically no higher than around 150 or so feet. No energy is required to leave the ground, unlike a bird that has to push and flutter its wings to leave the ground. People on the ground do not look in awe; hardly looking upward. There is a delightful sense of gentle freedom, rather than ‘escape’. No soaring into the stratosphere. A wonderful feeling of literally floating, but the ability to calmly steer oneself. No flapping arms or body-movement to facilitate ‘turning left of right’, just a smile on one’s face and a feeling of peace, serenity, and calm. As for ‘landing’, this can be a slow move to the ground, the body gradually becoming upright, and a feeling of glee!
Enjoying the phenomenon so much, I have often tried to initiate a flying Dream. No chance. It is not as if I could climb up to a rooftop and fall off. A flying dream takes no effort to elevate, so falling off would be a dangerous, probably lethal event.
Last night, I had the most amazing flying dream I have ever experienced. Once again, no effort, a gentle upward flight to a higher level than usual, but none the less, extremely enjoyable. I had a big grin on my face; gliding, floating, flying past hills and vales; energized, full of optimism, anything is possible sensation.
On awakening this morning I was in an incredibly positive mood! Considering the lockdown; I can’t enjoy the voluntary Exhibition Steward activity; ‘Kings and Scribes Exhibition’ at Winchester Cathedral. Wonderfully motivating and engaging with people the world over. And sometimes not having a mission; engaging with different nationalities and showing them the amazing artifacts can be a bit of a downer. But, I am healthy and have had my coronavirus vaccine!
On first realizing that I had been flying around some unknown area; not a city, but hills and meadows, I did try to re-engage with the scene; the flying dream. Also, I thought about the experience as if re-living the phenomenon. No such luck! But, I was positive and still am as I tap this essay out on my BlackBerry.
I have often discussed or described flying dreams. Perhaps I have met one or two people that have experienced such dreams. Their descriptions are vague and mine vivid. Especially last night as I reached heights never experienced before.
And so down to earth!
Should anyone have experienced flying dreams it would be great to read a description.
I still have a strong feeling of glee as I sit here; the hope of a repeat drifting in and out of my mind as if trying to visualize a runway……..but a runway is the last thing that is required. It is not as if one is going to an airport to board a plane.
A flying dream does not require a runway or landing pad, just the will of the subliminal, dream-like state that one can view as a liberation of the sub-consciousness or simply the spirit seeking the Universe of ‘anything is possible’; seeking freedom. Creating energizing great vibes!
Happy flying!
Dreaming of flying is one of the oldest and most deeply rooted dream images and is linked to the symbolism of air and sky, to the realms of thought, fantasy and spirituality.
But it is also associated with the symbolism of the ascent, descent and fall, with all the psychological implications and emotions that these situations suggest.
It will therefore be important to never generalize, but to evaluate the action of flying in dreams in relation to the situation that the dreamer experiences and the emotions of joy or discomfort that the dream causes.
My favorite kind of dream. Thank toy for sharing .
Yes, flying dreams are quite an invigorating phenomenon. Especially if they can be ‘induced’ through the desire to fly when dreaming. Happens rarely, when when it does it feels great!
As mentioned flying dreams are quite rare. I wonder if it has anything to do which star one is born. I’m a Gemini; apparently a butterfly fluttering from one task to another; no idea if that is true!
Well carol, perhaps some day we may meet each other flying high!
Thanks everso for your comment so much appreciated.

Flying dreams are the best! I haven’t had one in months, but when I do, they always give me such a feeling of freedom. In some of my flying dreams, I’m flying “just because. ” Other times, I’m escaping a situation and so grateful that I’m able to fly. During lucid dreaming (dreams in which you are aware you’re dreaming), I often try to fly. It doesn’t always work, but when it does, it’s amazing! Thanks for sharing your experience, Simon!
