The news cycle is a relentless beast.

Political debates rage, social tensions simmer, and the weight of “big picture” events can feel crushing. It’s easy to get swept away by the current of national discourse, to feel like a tiny boat tossed about in a vast, unpredictable ocean. The political climate, particularly in the United States, often seems designed to amplify our anxieties, to make us feel powerless in the face of forces beyond our control.

Many of us are grappling with a sense of overwhelm. The constant barrage of information, the stark divisions, and the uncertainty about the future can leave us feeling paralyzed. We scroll through social media, our hearts pounding with a mix of anger, fear, and frustration. We watch the news, our minds reeling with the latest developments from Washington D.C., and we wonder, “What can I possibly do?”

It’s a valid question, and one that many are asking.

The feeling of disenfranchisement is real, and it’s not unique to any one political persuasion. If you’re feeling it now, remember that countless others felt the same way during the previous administration, and they’ll feel it again in the future. This ebb and flow of political sentiment is a constant, and it’s vital to recognize that we are not alone in our struggles.

However, dwelling on the things we cannot control only amplifies our distress. It’s like trying to steer a hurricane with a paddle – futile and exhausting. The reality is, we have limited influence over the machinations of national politics. We cannot directly dictate the outcomes of elections, policy decisions, or legislative battles. We cannot single-handedly change the course of a nation.

But here’s the crucial realization: we can control our own lives.

We can control how we choose to live, how we interact with our families, and how we navigate our daily existence. We can choose whether to live in a state of perpetual fear or cultivate a sense of contentment.

This isn’t about burying our heads in the sand or ignoring the world around us. It’s about recognizing the limits of our influence and focusing our energy on the areas where we can make a difference. It’s about understanding that our peace of mind, our well-being, and our ability to thrive are not contingent on the actions of politicians or the outcomes of national debates.

We cannot control the weather, the pests, or the overall climate. But we can control the soil we cultivate, the seeds we plant, and the care we provide. We can nurture our own little patch of earth, creating a space of beauty and abundance, regardless of the storms raging outside.

Similarly, we can nurture our own lives, our own families, and our own communities. We can focus on building strong relationships, pursuing meaningful work, and engaging in activities that bring us joy. We can choose to be kind, compassionate, and supportive, creating a ripple effect of positivity in our immediate surroundings.

Try Strategic Engagement

This is not a call for apathy or indifference. It’s a call for strategic engagement. It’s about understanding that our most powerful contributions often come from the ground up, from the small acts of kindness, the daily acts of resilience, and the unwavering commitment to living a life of purpose.

When we feel overwhelmed, it’s helpful to take a step back and identify the sources of our anxiety. Are we consuming too much news? Are we spending too much time on social media? Are we engaging in conversations that leave us feeling drained and defeated?

If so, it’s time to recalibrate. Set boundaries. Limit your exposure to negativity. Prioritize self-care. Engage in activities that nourish your soul – whether it’s spending time in nature, practicing mindfulness, or pursuing a creative hobby. Find and practice civility.

The Choice is Yours

Remember, the choice between fear and contentment is ultimately yours. You can choose to be a victim of circumstance, or you can choose to be a master of your own destiny. You can choose to focus on the things you cannot control, or you can choose to focus on the things you can.

And here’s a powerful truth: when we focus on building a life of contentment, we become more resilient in the face of adversity. We become less reactive to the chaos around us, and more grounded in our own sense of purpose. We become beacons of hope, radiating positivity and inspiring others to do the same.

The past four years, like the present and the future, were filled with people who felt disenfranchised. Yet, they lived. They worked. They loved. They built their lives, one day at a time, doing what they could to advance their families and themselves. They chose to find joy and purpose in the midst of uncertainty.

Let us learn from their example. Let us choose to be architects of our own peace, builders of our own contentment, and cultivators of our own gardens. Let us calm down, focus on what we can control, and live our lives with intention and purpose. In doing so, we not only reclaim our own sense of well-being, but we also contribute to a more positive and resilient world.

Words like freedom and liberty get thrown around without consideration of their original meaning. Our forefathers believed freedom was the ability to say and do most anything without punishment. But liberty was staying free from those who spoke the loudest.
