Earth welcomes them with warmth
and food as they enter her sphere,
directs their mothers’ care, watches
her future spread and grow in them,
cheers them to get up and run with
each tumble and scrape. They do,
the cubs, puppies, kittens, toddlers,
chicks, all of them bursting with the life
earth, rain and sun pour into them.
Most of us smile when we
see them coming up as strongly rooted
as thistle or dandelion, though
some of us ignore or discount
their importance and some resent
their presence.
This nursery planet, though, regards them
as seedlings to sing to, train and water
until hand in paw or fin or wing or branch,
all of us see each other as partners
in her multi-layered symphony.
