Take for example substance dependency. Once you’ve become addicted to or dependent on a substance, you’ve altered your physical structure and your mental landscape to include this substance. This change causes you to believe you can no longer function without the support of the substance. However, any substance that moves someone away from independence is illusionary and not life-sustaining, therefore, you can be weaned from it without harm. Conversely, reliance on or guidance from the Divine is proactive, encourages independence, and leads you toward a state in which you function at a higher level than you did prior to the interaction.
