What is one of the keys to professional success they don’t teach you in business school? Understanding and integrating more of the power that you are, and know you are, but may or may not have claimed for yourself.
What kind of power are we talking about here?
Power, like wisdom, is one of those words that are bandied about by those who think they know what they are talking about. I think we are finding more and more of those these days as egos bloom bigger and bigger in the face of the changes happening on this planet, eh? No judgment, just sayin’.
I like to look at how a word is defined in the dictionary because it gives us a foundation of more clarity other than just thinking we know what the word means. It is always important not to go by words you don’t know the meaning of. That’s how you learn new words and build your vocabulary and understand what the heck is going on out there.
So, in our quest for a definition of power, we find that The Free Dictionary hits the nail on the head in this context. “Power” is defined as, “The ability or capacity to perform or act effectively.” It is also defined as “A specific capacity, faculty or aptitude” for instance, to use the “power of concentration.” It also represents strength, force, stamina. All of which we are, all of which we have, all of which we are learning to express.
When we think of these definitions in terms of ourselves, the true definition of power, deep power, is the capacity, faculty, ability to act effectively. We become a lighthouse, shining out to the world that power of our strength, knowledge, and belief in ourselves and our mission in the business world. That comes from our stamina in concentrating on what is at hand as well as what lies beyond the moment in the bigger picture.
When we pay attention to the daily choices we make and how they impact both now and the possible future, we are accessing our deeper power to intentionally impact the outcome of our lives.
The integration of your power can strike your heart at its core. It can cause you to change. It can cause inner work that can and will transform who you are if you allow it. None of that makes you “special,” however it does make you very powerful. The most advanced perspective on that, however, is that power is meant for your very own inner and outer work. It has nothing to do with anyone else. It is only yours and is not meant to be wielded like a weapon or flaunted like the latest designer sparkly bling.
Deep power is private and emerges from a foundational blend of characteristics … faith, courage, and surrender. Have faith in yourself and your core beliefs. Stand in your moral and physical courage to act rightly and in the face of adversity. And surrender to your human-ness. Make mistakes. Be human. But surrender your old, broken down, old world personas and adopt a new, real, true, loving persona. Smile along your way, every day.
As you access your true deep power, you are being, knowing, understanding and expressing who you truly are. You are very powerful You have worked hard for many years to get to where you are now, so accept and integrate your power. Do not be afraid of it. Explore it. Acknowledge it. Allow it to be.
