Dear World: It’s Time To Grow Up

Human beings as we know them have been around for about 50,000 years give or take. And in all that time, the only commonality that existed between them are hate, greed, and war.

By this time in our existence on this planet, we should have evolved far beyond the petty selfish hateful creatures we are. We should have realized that things like skin colour, language, nationality, and gender are not bones of contention but part of the diversity of humanity.

But instead, we thrive on conquest and oppression, even enslavement, We revel in vices. We treat many of our fellow human beings like they are sub-human. And we are all guilty of these transgressions. And we are all part of the mystifying need for control and conquest that has been turning the world into a bloody battlefield since at least the beginning of recorded history.

We have created great and powerful ideas and then weaponized them so we could get better at killing each other. And we have plundered the earth and brought it to its own breaking point with our greed and lust for money and power.

And now, here we are, with a climate crisis that is well underway. With the balance of life on earth severely out of whack, and all we can do about it is…nothing. We cannot come together as a single cohesive human force to share our knowledge and finds ways to fix all the things we have done wrong.

We cannot do these things because they would necessarily entail dropping all our centuries-old prejudices about others of our own species and learning to actually cooperate with our fellow man in all the most important ways. To put our collective heads together and attack the larger issues we are facing together.

In short, it’s time for the human race to grow up, get over all the bullsh#t we have created to keep ourselves separate from each other, and start moving this planet into a safe zone so that the generations that follow us will not have to live their lives under conditions that are much, much worse than the worst we are experiencing today.

I am gradually reaching by best before date and will probably be gone by the time the sh#t really hits the fan. But millions, like our kids and their kids will feel it and it will be painful.

All we have to do is grow up. Quit fighting like dumb-ass children and start cooperating with each other like adult human beings.

I know that this is just a dream I had. But I would love nothing more than to be proven totally wrong about all my predictions about the human race and its obsession with self-destruction.

I have been a writer since the age of 14. I started writing short stories and poetry. From there I graduated to writing lyrics for various bands and composers and feature-length screenplays, two of which have been produced. Early on in my writing career, I discovered advertising. While the other media have drifted in and out, communications writing and art direction have been the constant through a 20-year career senior positions in Canadian and multi-national agencies and a second career, which began in 1989, (Onwords & Upwords Inc), as a strategic and creative resource to direct clients, design companies, marketing consultants and boutique agencies. Early in 2020, I closed Onwords & Upwords and opened MurMarketing which is a freelance strategic development/copywriting/art direction service for businesses working to make a positive difference in the world. I currently write long format blogs in 4 different streams, encompassing, entertainment, marketing, and communications, life in general, and the renewable energy and recycling industries. These are currently published on beBee.com. I have, over the years, created more than 1500 blog posts. I live with my wife Heather in the beautiful Niagara Region of southern Ontario, after migrating from Toronto, where I spent most of my adult life. I am currently recovering from spinal surgery and learning to walk again.
