Please suspend your judgement for a moment. I am standing a cat for election in Britain. Yes, a cat !! By now you will be asking why or will have stopped reading this … hold on. This project is both deadly serious and a lot of fun. Stan the Cat is part of a satirical political campaign that aims to restore truth and justice to political life, now that our populist politics has reached record levels of tragic comedy, from Trump to Boris Johnson, Putin, and beyond.
What inspired this campaign?
In 2019, Stan The Cat did not come last in the UK General Elections despite ZERO campaigning, beating the Christian People’s Alliance in my area. We asked no one to vote for Stan but discovered that people actually liked our manifesto and disruptive approach to our broken politics !! The long-term Tory party agent told me at the hustings “If it hadn’t been for your stupid cat, you were easily the best candidate on the stage”. I decided that I might be on to something and crafted a strategy to actually secure votes in 2024.
Election Strategy
It occurred to me that :
- If I had campaigned across the long-term with a campaign team rather than a couple of weeks, we could easily have done much better.
- Certainly, if I had asked for people’s votes (I got 229 votes despite begging people to vote for the other candidates) we would have done a lot better.
- With a budget, we could have done several leaflet campaigns, town hall meetings and media coverage, and ;
- Stan the cat had much better policies than the established parties !!
What does Stan believe in?
Here is a small selection of the things that Stan’s human slave believes in:
End Brexit chaos. Apply to Rejoin the EU, to reclaim our seat at the top table, improve trade with EU and our place in the world.
Reform parliament root and branch – No 2nd / 3rd jobs, end dodgy contracts, make votes matter via a proportional representation system, reform our House of Lords.
Prosecute MPs who break the law and water companies who dump raw sewage in our waterways. Restore justice for some of the worst scandals in our time: The Post Office workers, contaminated blood victims, WASPI women, long COVID victims and so on.
