[su_dropcap style=”flat”]I[/su_dropcap]STRAIGHTENED MY TIE and slid to the front row of a sold out auditorium. Hundreds of people sat behind me. Later, I found out my seat wasn’t open to the general public. Nobody asked me to move and it was my pleasure to remain front and center for a truly inspiring presentation.
Many stuck around afterwards. You better believe I did.
I waited for my one-on-one with Alexis Ohanian and I’ll never forget what he said to me.
His advice was:
Learn even a little bit of coding and you’ll become instantly more valuable.”
In 2005, Alexis launched Reddit, a website which some people describe as the front page of the Internet. I take his advice seriously. Wouldn’t you?
Over the past several months, I’ve purposefully dismantled my non-technical background and broke into the tech world. Learning the ins-and-outs of developing software, writing and running lines of computer code and even learning to speak new programming languages. Listening to advice of successful people, like Alexis, is a smart idea.
Effectively communicating with my team has proven most valuable as my company continues to mature and diversify. I am fascinated with how software works. It’s like magic to me… and that is why I love (IT).
Now is the best time to begin making yourself more valuable.
