Have you ever pondered why you exist on Earth, among billions, at this specific time? While our presence might seem random or biologically necessary, mindfully delving into the “why” reveals a tapestry of spirituality, interconnectedness, and cosmic wonder.
Some sacred teachings propose we chose this wild journey on Spaceship Earth long before we arrived here. If that is the case, amidst the chaos, pain, and global polarization, why would anyone opt to be here now? This quintessential question often arises during life’s challenges. Have you ever considered why your soul chose this time and place? Is it karma, kismet, or mere chance? For many, it’s a question that often surfaces when faced with the latest news headlines.
Imagine this: We emerge as pure essence from the mystical unknown, land in a constantly changing vessel called a body, and navigate the human experience, gathering soul-enriching adventures. Then, when our wisdom bank is full, our soul ejects and departs, returning to its mysterious origin. Between arrival and departure, our curiosity leads us to ponder the unanswerable: Why? Why are we here—why now—why us? The mystery of it all is profound.
Contemplating the universe’s vastness while feeling connected to something greater can instill a sense of belonging—that we are an integral part of a greater Whole.
Even in difficult times, recognizing our place in this interconnected universe offers solace. If we are curious and awake, asking, “Why am I here?” encourages reflection on our role in life’s grand performance. It prompts us to consider whether we’re living authentically and fulfilling our true purpose—if we’ve even discovered it yet. Such reflections can lead to uncovering our natural talents and realizing their significance in our brief appearance on the world stage of humankind. Could this be the answer to “why?”
Marcus Tullius Cicero’s wise words, “Non nobis solum nati sumus” (“Not for ourselves alone are we born”), suggest that we exist for each other—that we come from Love so we can recognize it in the “other.” We intertwine our lives for personal growth and collective evolution. This is the essence of relationships. Perhaps this is what poets and philosophers mean when they say, “love is the cosmic glue binds us together.” Every interaction contributes to the universe’s cosmic dance. The divine paradox is that there’s only One of us here; from the One comes the many, and from the many emerges the One.
So, why are we on Earth now? This isn’t a rhetorical question but an invitation to delve deeper into our gifted life, igniting an open-minded quest into the mystery and a genuine exploration of the Self through mindfulness and self-inquiry—and then taking action. Perhaps we are here to learn emotional growth, to give and receive love, to connect with our source, and to realize that in our Oneness, we are not alone. Maybe it’s extending and experiencing selfless service to others, acknowledging that we are here for one another, the Universe, and ourselves.
Every generation has faced chaotic times, prompting the same question. Though today’s challenges differ from those of the past, they make the gift of life and the mindful inquiry into our purpose even more profound. I don’t propose to know the ultimate answer, but I know we are not here by mistake. As we progress into the year, may we treasure this journey by exploring the potential within and around us as we mindfully seek to uncover the “why.” Ultimately, we’ll realize that the journey is the destination, wherein, if we are open to knowing the answer to the quintessential “why”, it will reveal itself with every sacred breath we draw. How amazing is that!
