Are ‘Miracle People’ in Your Life Right Now?

teresa“Be faithful in small things, because it is in them that your strength lies.”

–Mother Teresa

A government critic once told Mother Teresa she would do better to give people rods and teach them to fish then to give them fish. She replied,

“The people I take care of – they are disabled, they’re hungry, they’re sick, they’re rejected by society, and they have forgotten what love is. They are completely broken. I will give them the fish to each, and then when they are able to stand and hold the rod, I will hand them over to you, and you give them the rod to catch the fish.”

She knew her calling as just a child of 14 in her native Albania, and at 18 she left her family and joined the Loreto Order of teaching nuns. She wanted to be in India.

This was a time when missionaries seldom, almost never, went home. She went to Darjeeling for training where she learned to speak Bengali. Twenty years as a teaching nun, she filed for petition and permission from the Vatican to become the first nun in the history of the Catholic Church to step outside convent walls as a nun to start a mission of her own.

Calcutta, in 1948, was devastating with homelessness, poverty and disease everywhere. She did not don a nun’s habit; instead she wore a sari. This is where she started her mission.

When Mother Teresa died in 1997, it is recorded her reach had been in 123 countries. She ran a mission of 5,000 nuns of her Order without the help of government grants or Church assistance. She had been awarded every conceivable prize of distinction.

  1. Are ‘Miracle People’ in Your Life Right Now? My humble response is an emphatic YES.

Miracles happen to each one of us every single day. Miracles are occurrences that transform our lives, thoughts, attitudes or in any way enhance our walk along life’s pathway. Many times, we do take such occurrences for granted and pass them of or as co-incidences without realizing that during these specific times, God wishes to be invisible. Other times he uses people, circumstances of all kinds to touch our lives in a special way. The silent touch of a blind child, the beautiful smile of the deaf, the simple nod of acknowledgement and a million such things are all miracles – if only we recognize them as such.

YES…….. There are many “miracle people” in my everyday life and I thank God for all of them.

  2. As a Lay Missionary of Charity and knowing in depth the life of Mother Teresa, I am so often aware of the miracles that happen and continue to happen in life. With the sisters that I am surrounded by in poorest parts of the city of which I live, I see these miracles of kindness, charity and love. I am made aware each time of God’s love in so many ways.
