All That Glitters Isn’t Gold – Even In The Digital World.

“During sleep, I dream of big houses. Always grander and more complicated than the ones before. I know that as long as my dreams create a new, large mansion to move into, I am still learning. My mind continues to transform.”

~ Maria Lehtman

If people understood the significance of dream symbolism, they might spend more time trying to decipher it, and learn much more about themselves and others. Today’s fast-track digital life is easy to confuse with prosperity.

After years of writing dream-diaries, I have learned beyond any doubt that money in dreams implies wealth – both spiritual and mental. When I write a check in a dream that bounces, it means I lack for inner guidance, a higher purpose. The symbol of actual, physical money and wealth in dreams is – well, let’s just say what goes in must come out.

How do you deal with digital glitter and awe?

“Mirror, mirror, on the wall, who’s the fairest of them all…” Social Media can turn into a reflection of ourselves. There are multiple articles about people getting locked into their social media streams. The limited streams become the primary source of information instead of the diversity offered by news and media.

People find themselves in a perfect state of illusion, and in a fruitful ground to be preys for fake news. We stay indoors to work, socialize and live in a cocoon of our making.

It is ironic because for the first time in the history of news we have actual influence over what type of information could go out, what we like and share, disagree with. Take the digital opportunities to influence, to voice out your thoughts, ideas and experiences.

If you have an entrepreneurial mind, the digital channels require very little money to start fundraising for a cause or create a Kickstarter funded project for artwork or innovation. We could use this little corner of our lives to change things.

Who is behind the digital mirror?

Very often: the ego. Either our own or someone else’s. It is hard for a person to be genuine in an environment that is not narrowed down to a specific audience.

If you are in a business world and connected on LinkedIn, “Facebook-type” posts will be frowned upon and directly commented on as non-business related. This happens even when posts are about people getting over issues initially stemming from the stressful working environment,  or other conditions affecting people’s career.

If you are in a Facebook friends world, you need to walk the path carefully with political views, business updates, personalized information vs. private, etc. And most definitely safeguard information related to your children.

With Digital Natives, you get a deep dive into the true mirrors. The relationship-kaleidoscope all neatly stacked into and an endless cavalcade of selfies and snapchats. It prepares people to what the digital world will look like – if they survive to adulthood without too much scarring. The digital reflection is fickle.

Our spirit must learn to survive even if the ego gets battered, compared to everyone else with everything better… At least, in appearance.

Living without the mask

It takes years to prepare the masks we need to learn for the world. Then it takes decades to undress them when we realize things have changed and we need a new identity.

Where do we find it? Very often from the past!

People faced with crisis need to build a new life, a new me and find a new coping mechanism for survival. Who are we, if we lose our jobs, our home, our health, our closest friend, a spouse..?

When my health situation went on ‘code amber,’ I explored my memories for what I was like as a teenager. I recalled how much I loved music. I started singing again, listening to Spotify, burning all my CD tracks to the iPod. Now and then I even play the piano. Gradually through the years, I recaptured creativity that was lost in the long working weeks for many years.

I no longer dream about winning the lottery or finding the great, life-altering job, or the biggest investment. I dream that I can keep developing what I have, enough to help my family and friends. And perhaps in time, spend a vacation without having to worry if my health is going to hold up for the day.

I find solace in the knowledge that much of what I gathered through the years in memories, experience, and skills, is still intact. The mind is a true explorer. The only boundaries it has are the ones we create.

Keep healthy! Lose the mirrors. Like Alice, step through the looking-glass to find what’s on the other side.

“If I had a world of my own, everything would be nonsense. Nothing would be what it is, because everything would be what it isn’t. And contrary wise, what is, it wouldn’t be. And what it wouldn’t be, it would. You see?”

~ Lewis Carroll, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland & Through the Looking-Glass

    • :o) ! Thanks, Chris, that sounds like the ideal place to start! I find my dream world so imaginative as is, that I need to actually tone down getting too many ideas for the journeys. 😉 However, I never miss an opportunity to read or look at a reference related to Alice ( the latest one I recall was in Star Trek Discovery). Alice’s story offers great metaphors for today’s search for our identity in social ecosystems.

    • If I want to get really imaginative, I find sleep deprivation works really well. I start seeing things that are just not there. 😉
