ON THE SURFACE one would think the law is intended to make health care affordable, or at least more affordable than prior to the law. Not true though. The cost of health insurance is only one part of health care costs. The ACA, aka Obamacare, doesn’t even do that in most cases. True it makes insurance available to some because other people are paying for it. However, it actually raises costs for others, notably young and healthy people. It also adds a new tax to those that opt to not carry health care insurance. Even with those increases though it is very clear now that the law is simply not economically sustainable.
But affordable health care encompasses the costs of hospitals, professional services, labs, medications, medical equipment, and a host of other costs and services. The ACA does nothing to rein in those escalating costs. Neither does it fix any of the Medicare or Medicaid problems or address the extreme costs of long term care.
Why are we even debating this bad law that doesn’t fix any of the major health care issues? Perhaps a better question would be why did our elected officials even pass it without reading it much less understanding it?
