After the recent years of congressional gridlock, I didn’t think it could get any worse. Well, a handful of Democrats in the house have managed to prove that theory wrong. They are, as you probably know, staging a sit in on the house floor over gun laws, or the lack thereof. Rep. Lewis, a former civil rights advocate likened the sit in to the race issue and the marches staged at Selma, Alabama in the 1960s.
I don’t see any relationship at all between civil rights and passing gun control laws. Well, I guess that one could argue that passing gun control laws infringes on the rights of those that wish to own guns. But, correct me if I am wrong, the civil rights issues in the 1960 era was about giving more rights to a large portion of the citizenship. However, the present sit in is about taking away, or limiting, the rights of a large portion of the citizenship. Tell me just how that is the same thing.
The sit in not only violates the rules of the house, but totally trashes whatever shredded dignity the house may have left. The action is a grandstand play for media coverage. It is childish and those participating should be dealt with as one would deal with a child having a temper tantrum in church. It simply is not acceptable for our elected representatives to act this way because they are not getting what they want. Grow up and act like a responsible adult.
Treating this as an acceptable way for a handful of representative to object to not getting their preferences sets a very dangerous precedent. It moves the house further down that slippery slope of never getting anything done.
Those represented by the participating representatives should demand a recall and thus establish that “we the people” will not endure such unprofessional and demeaning behavior of our elected representatives.
